View Full Version : Very high alcohol percentage?
Hi!
I've come across some rums that have very high alcohol content (up to 75%) and i'm a bit... iffy about that, i prefer rum at around 40-50%... i asked a friend if v high percentage rum could be diluted, and he said that he didn't think so... so i turn to you with hopes of some concrete answers :)
thanks :)

In Jamaica, Wray & Nephew White Overproof is the drink of choice.
However if Overproof on the rocks is not to your taste visit the MoR Database (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=398) for more info on this rum as well as Tiare's review of it and a host of cocktails using Overproof rum.
Yeah, i'm new to this site so i haven't looked there at all, maybe i shoud start to do that before posting & start getting to know the site in general :D
thx

No worries Nilo. There's lots to experience here. Like everything good, it takes time to discover. Happy browsing.

A lot of stronger rums are unaged and can easily be watered down to around 40%. Most aged rums are aged at stronger strengths and then watered down after blending. I'm sure many people here add water to their premium rum drinks. I nearly always add a splash of water to my rum on the rocks. Where overproof rum is popular, like RumRunner says in Jamaica, a shot of overproof is usually followed by a chaser of water (usually much needed!!) which basically has the same effect. Watering a drink down with water or mixer is not uncommon, however which rum you choose to use will make all the difference.

I agree with the Rumelier. Adding water is a mater of taste and brand. I usually stay away from the 75%ers. I have only seen drunk frat boy wanna be types drink Bacardi 151 as a shot (no offense if any are reading this).
The good thing is that many of the higher proof rums are relatively cheap. You can try them in a drink, and if you don't like it, it didn't break the bank.
Cooking with the higher strength rums works well though.cheers.gif
Just my two cents worth

The strongest rum that I have ever seen for sale is Sunset Very Strong Rum from St Vincent - 84.5% alcohol or 169 degrees proof.

Don`t forget that overproof rums often are used differently from lower proofs - often as floats in cocktails to add both kick and flavour (JWray and Lemon Hart151 are good examples of flavourful overproof rums) not to forget said LH 151 use in tiki drinks which now when sadly slowly dissappearing will be very hard to replace flavourwise.
Another common use of overproof rums are flaming tikidrinks, that is for instance a half lime shell filled with overproof rum and set alight to create a spectacular show. But lemon extract can be used for that as well drenching a crouton for example and is cheaper.
Yet another fiery use is to spray overproof rum like LH 151 mixed with bitters over cocktails to create a flavour sensation.
There are also many good high proof demerara rums which are good both to sip and mix with but hard to come by.
I use my own overproofs as floats in cocktails, or flaming tiki drinks or part of a mix of say 3 different rums thus using less of each.
So the overproof rums have their special use and are not to be seen as "other rums" - in my opinion.
As a float in a cocktail i think its superior.

Rums should not contain this much high percentage as it can lead to many disorders like dehydration or nausea. Please its my advice to blend it before drinkinf. 75%content can be lowered with new rums. use in propotions.

I was actually at a bar last month with a Barbadian Coast Guardsman whom said that he liked Sunset rum. He said that it was better than any of the Mt. Gay line? He's got my interest sparked...

We always talk about overproof rums just being over-flavoured rums. It's the alcohol that carries the unique flavours of the rum - more alcohol, more possible flavour.
Just use less of it - unless you're an inveterate drunk such as myself.
