Had a little taste of Morgan's Spiced rum last night at a friend's house.

Family had brought this back for him from London.

Is this rum part of the Cpt. Morgan family or its own deal?

As far as I know, this rum comes from Captain Morgan and is the same spirit as the regular Captain Morgan Spiced Rum which is available elsewhere. For reasons perhaps known only to Diageo, the rum is renamed and rebranded for the UK market. Whilst the rum itself is nothing to write home about, it seems to be fairly successful in the UK largely because of a lack of widely-available alternatives. With a bit of effort though, it's not all that hard to find the infinitely superior Foursquare.

I agree. There's nothing awful about this rum, I enjoy it with coke. There are just so many others I would chose over it. Like Gatomalo, Foursquare would be one and Sailor Jerry's, etc.

I really like that UK packaging better than our comical American version, but then again, I'm a first-generation American who grew up in a family that was entirely from Europe. This bottle reminds me of a lot of the bottles my dad kept in his bar. Far classier than the "message in a bottle" shape and label we have here.

Pity.

From what I know, Diageo makes and bottles several different rums under the Captain Morgan label depending on the market. From my taste it does vary, but I don't taste every bottle of Captain Morgan I encounter.

Morgan's Spiced is only 35% alcohol, and thererfore can't be called a rum according to British, and no doubt European, law. In this part of the world for rum to be called rum, it must be at least 37.5% alcohol.

I bought a bottle of Morgan's Spiced a few years ago and was very disappointed. It was bland and tasteless . I won't be buying another bottle.

In the US, rum must be at least 40% alcohol by volume.

Whatever the casual rum drinker will buy!

I got into rum drinking because of the Cap'n, so I'll never disparage him, but I will say that he's only allowed in my cabinet because of our past together. While I've "graduated" to more refined rums, I still partake in a glass or three of Cap'n and Coke when I'm with friends (and that's the only "rum" they have) or when I want to take a walk down memory lane.

With that said, I do prefer the overproof Cap'n over the regular. It is somehow magically smoother and better tasting than the regular Cap'n. I don't know how that happened, but at least to my palette, it's a tastier rum.

in the uk, morgan's spiced seems to have fallen by the wayside due to sailor jerry's being absolutely everywhere now these days. i dream that foursquare was everywhere too!!

Foursquare should be there? or soon anyway.

Doorly's XO does 10000 cases in the UK per year...Im sure foursquare would do the same if not better.

It's here, just not everywhere!
