It's the last full week of August and I'm catching up on some details in Chicago this week before heading back to NY next week for a day or two. Hopefully I won't catch another four hour delay for weather at La Guardia on the way out of NY.

Dear Ed,

Will be staying in Manhattan next week - any rum-oriented bars I should check out while in NY?

Cheers,

Nick

I've heard about this bar called the Rhum Rhum Room, but I get the feeling that you have to know someone who's been there to get directions.

Manhattan has a few places that are always on my list, but what I drink depends on who's working behind the bar. Death & Co has a great selection of rums and the guys and ladies behind the bar are passionate about what they pour.

Last week, Brian made me a grog that isn't on the menu yet, and may never make it, but if you get there early, and Brian is working, ask him for his new grog.

Pegu Club also has some rum passionate bartenders, again depending on whose behind the bar. Del made me a great drink last week as well.

Brandy Library has a nice selection of rums, though they vary from time to time.

PDT pours some great rum drinks but it can be a pain to get in, if you can even get in. I usually try to go early.

And then there is Brooklyn, only a couple of stops from Manhattan the Clover Club, Kate works Thursday right now behind the bar, there's a fake Tiki bar across the street from the Clover Club. Hotel del Mano is a bit of a walk. And there are more, but honestly, I was drinking and a friend was navigating with his iPhone so I didn't pay a lot of attention where we went. I'll try to figure it out the next time I go rum drinking in Brooklyn.

I'm told there is a Venezuelan restaurant in Brooklyn that got their liquor license yesterday, they're working hard to have the best selection of rums in the area and, more importantly, they're looking to have the best trained staff. For me, there are few things worse than seeing a great line up of rums without someone who knows what they've got or how to mix, pour or present it.

It's actually a bar in a friend's apt, they are very rum-centric, if that's a word, but they also enjoy the better of the lesser spirits.

La Guardia - you have to love it. I spent more time waiting in that airport or on airplanes trying to get home then I did actually flying. Throw in Chicago and you can have twice as much fun.
