There's a place near the MA/RI border- in South Attleboro, called Yankee Spirits and they have the greatest selection of rum I've seen anywhere! They basically took an old supermarket and made it a packy (if you're from MA, you know what I mean!)

We always shop there for beer and wine, but never really made it to the rum, as we didn't have a great appreciation besides Sailor Jerry, Goslings Black Seal, and Cruzan white, which we usually buy at the NH State stores because my wife's folks live 5 mins from the NH border.

I stopped in Yankee Spirits on Friday night and found Cruzan Blackstrap. I had been to almost 10 local stores and no one had it. They had that, lots of others I've learned about here on the boards, and a good selection of cachacas... Leblon is our favorite so far!

I highly recommend this place- and no we don't work there- we're just happy to have a place to source some of the great stuff we read about here!

Yankee Spirits has been around for a long time. They have a longstanding reputation for quality and customer service.

When I lived in Mass., they only had the Sturbridge store. I had no idea, until your post that they had branched out to South Attleboro. Thanks for that info! I see by their website (http://www.yankeespirits.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1) they have just opened a branch in Swansea.

I'm not sure how big the Sturbridge store is, but the Attleboro store is a monster! It's an old defunct supermarket- Almacs- a local place that went under long ago, and they fill the entire place. My wife always finds hard to get wines there, and the beer selection is great, ALTHOUGH they do sell a lot of beer past its prime. Now that most brands print a "best by this date" on the case/bottle, it's easy to see some stuff still on the shelf is past it's date. They do mark it down a bit, but I'd rather pay full price for fresh beer. The only exception is a good belgian, which does get better with age!

Thanks for the note in MA. Are they allowed to sell online in MA?

I don't think its a strong answer to Ed's question but I've got a large liquor store (somewhat like yankee) in western mass. that sells online...only catch is they only ship to Ma. addresses. So it might be in mass. that they can sell online but are unable to ship beyond the border. Penguin there are some others that get better with age too for beer. Imperial stouts, doppelbocks, barleywine, basically anything that has a high alcohol content or smoked beers. You might already know this but I had to chime in.

Yes, unfortunately! But they are the source of the wife's rum cream, so that is all important - thanks to you for alerting me to that online store a while back!!you rock.gif

Hey guys,
Just got back from VA. Didnt find anything good down there except a trade for Zaya Guat. Anyhow, Kappys in Medford has 4 different types of Rhum JM if ur interested in Agricoles. Cirace V & Sons Liquor, downtown Boston has Pyral Pistol. Its the only place in MA that I have found it. Ball Square Liquors in Sommerville has 3 bottles of ED21 for 69.99. I wil continue to add as I find.

Thanks Mike!

I was in Brockton yesterday and I stopped in to Blanchards by the Westgate Mall- they had W&N White Overproof! First time I've ever seen it in all the stores I've looked in! I think I paid $18 for the 750 ml. Now to make some falernum to the exact recipe!

I'm starting a new job next week, so I have this Friday off and me and the Mrs are heading to Yankee Spirits to stock up.... I saw that had rum cream last time, so surely getting some of that! I'll catalog what they have and post on here over the weeeknd....

I was in MA last weekend and stopped at Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge - they had Appleton V/X (750's) for $8.99 a bottle!

Holy crap - this rum is usually $14+!

I checked and it was not a typo - they had cases piled up with a big $8.99 sign on top.

I bought a case and kind of regret that I did not buy two.

Great rum selection there BTW.

Hi all,

The pyrat pistol seems to be all over the place - I'm surprised you have not seen it before - same with the W&N overproof - they have just about everywhere - Kappy's, all over in Cambridge (Supreme liq, Liq world, etc)

I stopped by Martignetti's on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton recently and they had a pretty impressive selection of rums! Many not widely available around here... Cubaney, etc

Also, not sure where you all are, but in Newburyport, New England Liquor world on somthing like that has the full Barcelo line-up: Anejo, Gran Anejo, and Imperial, as well as Depez Blue Cane Rhum!

still on the hunt!

Went to Kappy's in Malden today:
Rogue Spirirts Spiced 25.99
Matusalem Gran Res. 29.99 & Clasico 19.99
Goslings Family Old 66.99

Nothing spectacular as you can see above. I'm going to try Atlas on my way home from work tomorrow.

I was at Yankee Spirits in South Attleboro over the weekend and here's what they had on the shelves. Didn't get a lot of prices- just selection.

El Dorado gold/12 yr/15yr
Barbancourt, anejo
Flor de Cana dry/gold
Tommy Bahama ?!?!
Plantation GR
all the Appletons
Ron Mausalem GR/clasico platino
Ron Zacapa solena/GR
Zaya 12 yr
Ron Anejo aniversario
Brugal white/anejo
Don Q cristal/gold
Cruzan- all flavors/rum cream/blackstrap

And the usual assortment of Pussers, Bacardi, Capt Morgan, Malibu, Admiral Nelson, Sailor Jerry, and a lot of lower shelf, no name stuff. A good selection for me, as we're just discovering the better rums! So- any recommendations from this list??

Also a decent Cachaca selection

Da Roca
Velho Barreiro
Ilha Grande
Coluninha
Agua Luca
Dona Beja
Rochina
Pitu
Pirassununga
Leblon

Anyone recommend anything on this list? We LOVE the Leblon, but we've been drinking so much of it so fast, the $27 a bottle price is starting to pinch a bit!

Thanks!

Ah, Blackstrap......where have you been all my life!

Since we discovered it a few weeks ago, we've been drinking it like it's going out of style! We even made some cinnimon rolls and my wife usually just makes a glaze from warm water and confectioners sugar. This time we added a little Blackstrap to the glaze.... YUM!!!!!

Seems like a decent selection - about the status quo for around here with the exception of the El Dorado's - those are pretty rare in MA! Those two are worth getting for sure! Great rums and each quite different from the other - a real treat!

I had a company event at Rose Wharf yesterday afternoon and was thinking of trying to get to Federal Wine afterwards to report on the offerings, but didn't make it as it ran late and had to get home to the kids' events... darn! Anybody been by recently?

Oh, btw... was the Appleton V/X on sale at the Att location for 8.99 as LM saw in Sturbridge? That's a hell of a deal!!!

Kappys in Medford has Lemon Hart (14.99) Mt. Gay Special Reserve (24.99?)
Also, they have 3-4 Plantation Rums, I got a bottle of the Plantation Barbados Grand Reserve from there. Wow! That is some really great rum. I got a 1.5L for 31.99, I think it was well worth the price.

Cirace V & Sons Liquor, downtown Boston has Lemon Hart(17.99) & Lemon Hart 151 (24.99)

I'll just add to this post all the stores I've come across in the MA/NH area to keep it simple :)

Went there today and they have La Favorite Rhum Agricole Ambré and Pritchards Crystal Rum.

Mike,

Thanks for the tips. I will try and do the same, though I am not out of NH as often. I had taken advantage of the Flor de Caña 4 at Kappy's by chance.

C/A,
Good deal...Its always great to know where to go :D
Kappy's in Malden has been the only place I have seen the Flor de Cana extra dry...The Kappy's in Medford and Peabody didn't have it  and the 20+ other liquor stores I've visited didn't carry it either...

This month at the NH State Liquor Stores:

Barbancourt 8yr (5 star) for $17.99
Goslings Black Seal 1.75L for $24.99
Goslings Black Seal 151 for $14.99
Goslings Black Seal for $13.49
Cruzan Single Barrel for $26.99
Bacardi 8 for $19.99

All of which I recommend and haven't seen at lower prices elsewhere.

(Of course, the nearest State Liquor Store just overhauled the store and now, among aged rums carries only Pusser's, Pyrat, and Mt Gay XO. Gone is the Barbancourt and my favorite $19.99 Pampero Anniversario :( Yet, if you need a flavored, spiced, or Bat-emblazoned rum, every choice under the sun)

Sounded kind of bitter--sorry.

Don't sound bitter to me at all...I completely understand.
I've spent the past two weeks rum hunting...some good deals, some not so great.
I do enjoy the hunt though ;)
I generally go to the Salem, NH store to get my daily mixing rum...
It does seem like the selection is getting smaller and smaller in most places.
Maybe one day I'll happen upon an old liquor store that still has rum on the shelves from 10yrs ago...ahhh, that will be the day.
