Isn't Karma a strange and wonderful thing. I was in a local boutique shop today and they had a brand new selection of rums. And there it was....

Twenty years ago on my Honeymoon in Tobago with my wife I had enjoyed a Local Rum which I really liked. The same rum I mentioned in the article at the start of this thread.

ANGOSTURA ROYAL OAK RUM

It has to be the same. The same funky 70's style bottle and the same Label I remember. Now I haven't seen this rum for twenty years.

Now maybe I'm fooling myself filled with nostalgia for a remembrance of a wonderful time, but I really think this is that elusive rum that nothing sold in Canada at the time could compare to. But what are the odds of me finding this rum on the day that my interview gets published?

Can anyone tell me if Angostura Royal Oak was around twenty years ago?

Wow! I can't say that I have ever been to a liquor store where I could try before I buy premium rums! If that's how they do it in Edmonton I might just have to make a trip there sometime!

We need to get you away from the rum and caramel colored high fructose corn syrup.

In Edmonton and Calgary (the cities I am most frequently in) most of the premium liquor stores have a tasting counter. Even in the Sobey's liquor stores (Western Cellars) a tasting area can usually be found at the back of the store. Open bottles are usually left by the reps from various importing companies exactly for this purpose. I always explain to the staff that I will not buy a premium bottle without knowing what it tastes like. The only hitch is that you can only sample what is already open. So no matter how much I would like to sample the Pyrat 40 year old, I cannot. Some of the stores do tasting nights in which they charge a fee and supply samples from their own stock. What left over from these tasting nights goes behind the sampling (tasting) counter.

Now I never ask for a sample of the same bottle twice. I suspect I would quickly be out of the sampling loop if I were to abuse generosity. It is also my policy to buy from the store that allows me to sample, even if its cheaper across the street. Sampling has saved me from enough bad purchases to more than make up for it.

Now you have all seen this before if you've read my posts; but my unique way of doing rum reviews has made it to another website.

http://rumconnection.com/uncategorized/dykstra-system/

I will be a guest rum reviewer on Rumconnection for the next year. But as you can see I have insisted on a link back to the Ministry of Rum so persons could enjoy the ambiance of this forum as well. After all, this was my first rum home and I plan to continue reviewing rums and posting here as well. cheers.gif

Now I just have to figure out how to get the rum they want me to review across the border.

Any suggestions?

(Hey I just noticed that in the listing of their most popular articles I'm ahead of Kenny Chesney. Apparently I got over 5000 hits last week. Thanks for clicking that first link everyone.)
