If you're looking for a bottle of rum in a unique bottle that probably won't fit on your shelf this may be the rum for you. It's good rum, but apparently didn't live up to expectations in terms of sales.

I picked up a bottle in Miami while attending Rum Renaissance. I haven't got around to tasting it yet but was told that our local supermarket is going to be carrying it next week and a sample will be on it's way to me when it arrives. So I will open that one as I haven't tried a rum from that corner of the world before. I also picked up a bottle of Jack Tar rum that originates in Jamaica and bottled in South Africa. Always wary of bottles with a nautical/pirate/seaman name!!

First impressions are not favourable. I was surprised when I poured it that the rum came out of the bottle white as it came out of a red glass triangular bottle. I obviously hadn't read the label closely!! Will check on my bottle at home to see if it is the same rum. Not good when they recommend you drink it with lemon!!
I was skeptical of lemon in rum drinks too until I had this at Little Branch in NY - fabulous. As for the Starr Rum, I've always heard nice things about the brand owner, and he's been in the market 6 or 7 years now. Anyway, try the drink below and admire your new red bottle.

I ordered 4 bottles of it only to find out that I just moved to a F-Uped state: MA...
I didnt realize the restrictions on Alcohol in MA were so crazy until Shoppers Vineyard cancelled my order!!!

I know this discussion is from 2009, but is the rum making a comeback? I was visiting Astor Wine & Spirits (NY) Saturday afternoon and they were having a tasting event for the rum. I believe I've seen it other places, but never paid attention to it.
Starr reminded me of something else I tried before as well as vodka. I noticed on Astor Wine's site, they mention another tasting event in May.
Just wondering.

We're with Angelsword on this one; we love it! glass.gif
It makes a wonderful Daiquiri, either alone or with an equal part of El Dorado 3 yo white (or another quality white of one's choice). We will certainly find other cocktail uses to highlight the fine qualities of this unusual rum, but the Daiquiris are so good, we lack motivation to discover other suitable potions. :D
BTW we don't find it vodka-like at all, rather unique and flavorful. It was fortuituous that we tried it before it had disappeared at shoppers (thanks Angelsword for the timely recommendation). We were also able to pick up a few backup bottles at closeout (the $15.99 price eased the purchase).

If you see Starr discounted go for it, it very well could be a local distributor change. The brand owner spends time in NY and LA so I wouldn't expect it to disappear from those cities until the end. I haven't seen it gain the audience that was anticipated.
