The Reef on Commercial (@ Venables)
Reef and RRI have initiated: “Reef Rum Nights”
This will occur the third Tuesday of the month and will basically involve a showcase rum (or two) with food pairings made up by their Caribbean Kitchen.
The reef is very excited about Doorly’s XO; so we get first kick at the can; but other agents will be invited to sample out their wares as well.
We are hoping this really becomes something special where rummies can get together and talk shop in person (no offence Ed)
Hope to see some of you July 21 between 5:30 and 7:30 at The reef on Commercial!
Vanpatt

Thanks for the info and for putting this together RRI. I won't be able to make the first night as my wife is out of town that week and I'll be looking after the kids, but I'll definitely try for the one in August. Keep us posted if you'll be showcasing the Doorly's there again.
I didn't know the Reef had a location on Commercial? Is this the same restaurant as the one on Main?
Rum Runner Imports

Yes, the Reef on the Main was the original and Commercial street (and one in Victoria) are expansions.
We'll catch you at the next one Vanpatt...send a buddy or two in your stead!

Great work Rum Runner! Never been to the place but I checked out the menu and it looks great. I only wish that Tuesdays were better days for me, I have to work till late Tuesday night every week, I will try to meet up at some point but it will have to be at a later date. The rest of you have a great time, I envy you all ;-)
Cheers to empty glasses

Sounds Good Duff...
I think Im being built up as a bit of an expert at Reef Rum Nights. (I think of myself as more of an Enthusiast and Humble Visionary:D)...so it will be nice to have some other MoR guys to voice their knowledge.
Saxman--that sucks that Tuesdays conflict with your work schedule; my only advice is: quit, in the name of Rum!

All things considered, I think it went well...the set up will need a bit of a tweak as we were just in a series of tables strung together end to end...so I imagine the head and tail found it difficult to hear. That and the Reef was packed!
Nobody introduced themselves as a MoR member, so unless they were just being shy, I don't think any ministry folk attended. :(
Nevertheless every month has a third tuesday!! The next is Aug 18th.
Come on out, the food is great, the rum selection is pretty fantastic for our part of the world and the feature rum is sampled out for free! yay.gif

Good to hear the event went relatively well. I think I'm good for August 18th and will try to attend. Sounds like we need a secret handshake or something along those lines to identify ourselves??

Jeez..we might even get some yanks coming up for free HC!

Vanpatt
08-14-2009, 01:33 AM
I should be able to make it and will see if some friends want to join me.
How did the reef decide on HC 7 yr? Is the being promoted by the agent or was it the restaurants choice?
Rum Runner Imports

Im not completely sure how Claudine came to that decision...

Thanks to Vanpatt and friend for coming out and talking rum.

Very impressed with the Old Sam...
The night went well and all who attended enjoyed themselves.
As per Claudine, the format for the tastings is going to change dramatically and starting in the new year, there will be a rum tasting every Sunday!

The Reef on the Drive is happy to announce that we will be launching a weekly rum tasting event in 2010 that runs from January to April.
We will be featuring premium rums such as Doorly's XO, Mamajuana, Goslings, Havana Club 7, Pyrat, El Dorado 15 and many more.
***I've posted this under Rum Events as well, but I thought I'd add it to this thread just to ensure everyone got a chance to see it***
I'm looking at Sundays and am hoping that this will work better for the MoR members in the Lower Mainland. I'd love to have it be a weekly spot for everyone to gather and talk with reps about some great rum!
We will also be featuring a cocktail that includes the rum du jour. It will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. but I would like to invite members to let me know if there's a different time frame that works or a different day all together? I would love to meet more members in person and get to know as many people in my area as I can. I can't do it Friday or Saturday due to the sheer volume I experience those days. The intimacy of the night, I fear, may be lost. I also wanted to do it on one of my quieter nights.
I would love to have MoR members from other areas also come and check us out one Sunday.
I'd love to hear some feedback. Thanks!

Hi Rumdealer,
I enjoyed the evening with the Havana Club 7 and I'll certainly try to attend as many nights as possible in the new year. I work a typical 9-5 job downtown so ideally a worknight works best for me. I live in Coquitlam and coming back to Vancouver might be a challenge on some Sundays. How would Thursday's work at the Reef for the tastings? I could arrange an after work group on this day but it likely won't happen on Sunday's as most of my colleagues (myself included) have kids which we spend with the family. Right now, a lot of my friends go to the Shebeen for Whiskey downtown once a week so there is no reason I can't redirect them to the Reef to enjoy some premium rum!
If it has to be Sunday, it still works better than the original Tuesday gatherings for me.
Cheers,
Vanpatt

Hey Vanpatt,
Thursdays are a possibility. As of now, it looks like Sundays may win the other polls I have out there, but, if you ever want to come down with an after work group, I'd love for you to visit! I work pretty much every Thursday - Monday so just a quick heads up to the restaurant and I'll make sure you get taken care of. ;P

yup, that's the official list. The only change is that the February 28 slot that was TBA is now La Tondena rum from the Philippines. That will only change if a couple of Caribbean rums that this importer also carries come in in time for the session (either Matusalem or La Isla)
Please make mention if you're from the Ministry when you're in and ask for the GM, Claudine. I'd love to meet you folks and chat in person!

I'm curious to see what the cocktail taste like...and have we a name for it?
I have a name in mind for the Hispaniola Mamajuana cocktail coming up on the 17th, but nothing jumped out at me for the Doorly's XO.
See you there rumlings.

Reporting back from the front line...The first Reef Rum night of 2010 was a little quiet but I imagine most people were still pickled from NYE.
Doorly's XO was sampled and very well received and the cocktail really impressed (myself included). Thank you to Rumdealer and her staff...

The rum menu is as good as it gets in our relatively rum starved province--I'm going to let Rumdealer fill you in on the details. As far as cocktails go I would start with the newly created Bajan Bay Punch and go from there. The reef also makes their own in-house ginger beer from scratch which is really tasty.

UnkleNeeko, if you're planning on coming on the 10th for sure, then I'll try to make that happen. Keep us posted.
Let us know your plans for Vancouver Ed as they develop and I'll definitely make myself available. It would be great if you could plan to visit the Reef on one of their rum nights!

a huge thank you to UnkleNeeko for coming out! Very nice to meet MOR members from the area and beyond. Ed, I'd be thrilled to have you down.
This January was a smashing success! Once word spread about what we were doing, we were packed between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. which is the complimentary sampling portion of the evening. The rum flows pretty freely on Sunday and don't be surprised if you come down and I sample out more than just our feature ;P
Lots of great cocktails that my staff and I concoct and we're always looking for people to test our experiments on...
February 7th should be a bit quieter as it's Superbowl Sunday. I do have a TV but I keep it on silent with the closed captioning on. Just a reminder about the line up for the month:
February 7 - Brugal
February 14 - Flor de Cana
February 21 - Lamb's Navy
February 28 - Matusalem

Woo hoo! I'm looking forward to seeing you again too, Uncle Neeko! Yes, there will also be a great big Mamajuana launch party at the Reef once Rum Runner Imports and I hash out the details.
Sorry for not responding with the March features, March has been kind of a rough month for me on a personal level. However, spring is all about new beginnings so here's the line-up for April:
April 4 - Pyrat XO
April 11 - Diplomatico
April 18 - Cruzan Single Barrel
April 25 - Appleton
Don't forget to say hi when you come in as I never miss a Rum Night! Thanks folks and hope to meet more of you soon!
Hey...just came back from my first rum Reef night and it was well worth the wait. The food was excellent and spicy, the rum selection was awesome and Claudine was a fantastic hostess.
Myself, Neeko, and Claudine sampled Mamajuana (pronounced honey taste), old vs new Brugal and old vs new Cruzan Single Barrel. Unfortunately since taking over those brand, Pernod-Ricard has run them into the ground (IMO). The old styles of both rums were flavourful and pronounced as one should expect a rum. The newer styles are bland and generic. This event is something that all rum lovers in BC, Washington should attend and do their best to promote.
I defintely look forward to many more rum Reef nights.tp;

Another good time at the reef (Thanks Claudine!). JMac summed it up nicely. I really enjoyed the "old vs new" hands on discussion we had too.. which began from tasting and notes on the relatively "new" Pyrat XO (Patron vs Planters), if I remember correctly :) Looking forward to my next visit to the Reef..hope to see you theregzzg

Claudine, is the Appleton rep going to be in attendance and if so, any idea which rums from their line that they'd be bringing? Looking forward to trying some of your great cocktails that I've been reading about!

Yes, the rum rep for Appleton will be there. We discussed her bringing the V/X, 8 and 12 year to sample which is what I believe will happen. I can't guarantee that as the original deal included just the V/X. However, for the MOR, there's always more than just the feature rum available for sampling ;P
BIG THANKS to UnkleNeeko and JMac for coming by. I've seen John twice in a row and would love to meet more members!
VanPatt can't wait to see you. Also folks, May kicks off with the Hispaniola Mamajuana launch on Saturday the 1st featuring original Mamajuana based cocktails and shots and then Rum Night tasting Sunday, May 2nd.
Still looking at what to line up for the rest of May as we only planned 'til the end of April. Any suggestions, let me know!
