Waitrose have Angostura 1919 reduced from Ј23 to Ј17 till the end of June 2009, and Havana Club Anejo Especial reduced from Ј17.15 to Ј13.65, also till the end of June.

Good old Waitrose! I'll have some of that ED5.

I got my bottle of El Dorado 5 one day before the end of the Waitrose deal! I wanted to get it earlier but I was waiting for a time when I'd be in the store on my own without my girlfriend as she would have given me hell for buying "yet another bloody rum". Luckily, I made it just before the end of the offer. I'll probably crack it open this weekend when she's not looking.

Looks like the English Harbour 5 yr old is on special offer at Waitrose as well now, priced £14.99. I still haven't finished my last bottle of English Harbour bought from Waitrose, and I've not yet opened my bottle of Chairman's Reserve purchased a few months ago from the same store, so I should probably give it a miss this time.

I wish other supermarkets would follow Waitrose's lead and get some decent rums in.

Can either of you tell me what the Chairmans Reserve is like? Or the English Harbour 5 year old for that matter?

I didn't find the Cockspur 5 that i grabbed from Waitrose to my taste. Didn't dislike it so much i won't drink it but shan't rush to buy another.

Which Cockspur did you try? Do you mean the 5 star?:

I haven't opened my Chairman's Reserve yet so I cannot comment on that one, but I love the English Harbour 5 yr old and I think it's excellent quality for the money. What kind of rums do you usually like? Which ones have you liked/disliked so far?

Yep, I did mean the 5 star - lazy typing!

I think I generally like rich more sweet rums like Barbancourt 5 star and the 15 year old. I really enjoy the 5 year old El Dorado that came from Waitrose recently and tried the 12 year old in a bar a few weeks back - liked that too. Having said all that i do enjoy Mount Gay XO as a late night sipper which i find to be quite dry. I suppose what I'm saying is i'm not completely sure i have a particular taste. Mood sometimes plays a part so maybe i should give the Cockspur a second chance.

How would you describe the English Harbour 5 yr old - sweet, dry, smooth, rich?

I guess the Cockspur 5 star is not really a sipper - best used in cocktails and mixed drinks. If you want to sip, then the Cockspur 12, which is also carried by Waitrose, is a much better option. If you like the Mount Gay XO then you should definitely enjoy the Cockspur 12.

And, if you like the Mount Gay XO then you should also enjoy the English Harbour 5 yr old. I'm not that great at descriptions, but I'd say it's dry with a rich peppery sweetness (if that makes any sense) - it's a proper rum, smooth but with a pleasant and slight fiery burn on the way down, a very good sipper and exceptional quality for the price, and it's on special offer right now at Waitrose at £14.99. It's one of my favourite regular sipping rums!

Yes, I would without doubt recommend both the Cockspur 12 and the English Harbour 5 yr old. Both seem to be highly-regarded by the forum members.

Thanks Gatamolo, on that description i will feel better about parting with my hard earned on a rum i have yet to try and will head down to Waitrose for a bottle of English Harbour as soon as possible.

I think that gatomalo has described the English Harbour 5 year old very well. I also rate this rum very highly.

I haven't tried the Chairman's Reserve for some time, and I don't really remember what it was like, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't unpleasant.

Interesting point about how our tastes differ according to the mood we're in. I've got a craving for the drier rums at the moment. It's probably my body's way of telling me that I'm eating too much chocolate.
