View Full Version : Why does this taste bad?

Hi all,
I'm drinking some Cadenheads Green Label 1975 at present and to be honest I haven't got a lot of nice things to say about it. I'm of the opinion that I must be missing something and my pallet just isn't there.
In the glass it is almost without nose. The predominate scent is the alcohol and that is providing a nasal burn that is masking everything else.
In the mouth; there is no real surprise as it is a harsh drink. Bitter, dry and has no subtlety at all. After taste reminds me of being 15 and taking a swig from a bottle of Jim Beam. In fact if I was blindfolded I'd say this drink was a bourbon not a rum.
Does anyone else have experience with this? Is it the bottle or is it me?

My experience with Cadenhead's has been really hit or miss. One of the best rums I can remember was a Cadenhead barrel proof aged more than 20 years, but I've also been sorely disappointed in some of their rums. In their defense they bottle some great whiskies, but they have yet to figure out the rum industry.

Apparently the 25 yo Demerara (http://www.refinedvices.com/forum_/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=319) from Cadenhead is really good stuff.
These rums are all aged in Scotland as far as I understand and probably in Scotch whisky barrels which makes them a bit different than the tropically matured Demeraras. I'm not sure but are these also single cask products like the Samaroli Demerara rums? The 1975 Samaroli (http://www.refinedvices.com/samaroli-demerara-1990-and-1975) I recently reviewed was also quite dry and light and had some bitterness and whisky like qualities but it was certainly not bad.

Haven't been fortunate enough to taste the featured bottle. Is it cask strength / overproof?
I'd suggest adding a bit of water and some time to breath (in the glass) as well.

Cadenhead...they make some funky stuff. It's an acquired taste. I have yet to acquire that taste.

No, it is UP. 40.5% and I have tried diluting it and the same flavours are there. I'm putting it down to being one that I just don't like. Shame as it cost me a pretty penny. I'll try it on a few whiskey drinkers and see what they think

I'm in a similar boat with a bottle of Cadenhead's Green Label Guyanan 9yr rum. If anything, my bottle might be worse.
So...do I just chuck it?

No, try to mix it with something.

Cadenhead really ought to know that the correct term is Guyanese and not "Guyanan". If they don't, then it's not surprising that the rum isn't very good.
