Havana club - Barrel proof

My local liquor store is getting this in. Has anyone tried this one? How does it compare to other Havana club products?

It is a bit stronger (though not quite barrel proof despite the name) but you wont notice it in the taste as much as in the nose. I'm not sure what it is meant to be, a sipper or a mixer or both?

HCBP is very good - I really like it a lot. I believe it did have more bite than other HC rums, but I found it had a great nose (careful using a snifter like the Count said), a bit of burn but underlying smoothness when you roll it around in your mouth, and a nice loooong finish.

I have only tried it as a sipper but now I'm thinking there's a HCBP daiquiri in my future...

Not sure what your price will be, but my bottle cost me around $40US in Chile.

It's my opinion that of all of the rums which Havana Club produces, the HCBP is an oddity. It's agressive profile jumps in your face. The Especial is light, really light. The 7 Anos is a smooth operator which befriends you and listens. The Barrel Proof is that ole buddy which has a loud voice as he regales you with wild stories. You know that guy. You love him but you don't invite him to all of your parties!

This rum gives the drinker a taste of the Cuban style on the wild side. And, it does this while retaining its Cuban roots. It's well balanced with some fruit and sugar tones, but never too sweet.

I always pick up a bottle or two while passing through one of the Heathrow duty free shops. For me, HC Barrel Proof is a very nice sipper.

Pardon but what is silver dry? Is this old labeling for the Blanco perhaps?

It was discontinued in 2004, I've heard. It is not the Blanco Anejo, by taste or color. But, if they still make a Blanco which is colorless, and really DRY, then, that would be it.

Hi Mammel,

My brother-in-law brought me a bottle from his trip to Cuba last year. I found it a bit different from the usual offerings (7 years and Anejo Reserva), but quite good. Not $50 good though, as it costs in Ontario. It is not sold in Quebec, strangely.

I like the Barrel Proof. As Don Piero notes, this rum has a little burn to it, but I find that a few drops of water and a few minutes in the glass reduces it. I like the spiciness of this rum, it has a little more behind it than the 7 Anos, which I like quite a bit.
