Visiting realtives in Atlanta this week and as I always do I make a habit of visiting some of the local liquor stores to pick up different rums that I can't find back home in Delaware. 1st bottle I picked up was a bottle of Pampero Especial....figured for $21 bucks was worth a try since I like the Anniversario one quite a bit. Upon 1st sip I was surprised how unlike any other Venezulan rum I have tried. This rum very dry tasting straight and had hints of dark roast coffee and cocoa. It reminded me more of a Mexican style rum similiar ro Bacardi Anejo, Solera and Mocambo 20 yr. Not sure I will rush out to stock up on another bottle of this.

It is quite different than the Anniversario. I tasted it once, and I agree with you.

This is one of the big sellers in Spain, which is where I first got into rum, and this was one of the rums which started me on my path. It's an entry-level mixer which does a good but not spectacular job. It's not a patch on the Aniversario, obviously, and in my opinion it should only be sipped as a last resort. I have a couple of bottles tucked away for mixing, and I always make sure I have some in reserve, maybe more out of sentiment than anything else.

Best only as a mixer, not for sipping. It is very cheap in Venezuela, $21US is a rip-off. The Especial is not anywhere close to Anniversario which is an extremely good sipping rum, though Santa Teresa 1796 is better in my opinion, though more expensive.
