My first purchase of my own Rum!
The last rum I got was a gift. And I bought *drum roll* Pyrat Rum XO Reserve
It was all decorated with a yellow ribbon and a buddha medallion and written numbers on the side.
It had a real tight cork on it, was like a wine bottle cork, so I used my cork opener after trying with my knife and my teeth. At first it was no problem, the cork opener went in with no problem, then I pulled, and the cork still remained. So again with my teeth and the cork came out. The remains of cork floating around in the rum.. Stupid Cork!

Its what I get I guess, it was on sale.
It tastes strong, much stronger then Zayan, a very dominate flavor of coconut?
Smells good. The taste is much sharper. Anyone else had a bad cork experience?
Oh the cork is totally ruined and had to used the Capt Morgan Private stock cork to cover the hole, not a good fit, but it covers it.

I feel your pain my friend, at least you're not trying to impress a lady (that's happened with me back in the day with wine). I MUCH prefer screw tops now a days and think cork looks great...but doesn't do as good a job and has a ton of failures.

Ya know, You might get 10 different bottles of corked rum and none of them will do that to you. Luck of the draw I guess.

It has happened to me only once and it was with a bottle of Pampero Aniversario. Of course I was annoyed at first but then I realized a bottle of Pampero with cork floating around in it was a million times better than having no bottle of Pampero at all! The rum was undamaged and the floating cork didn't seem to be doing anything sinister. Luckily I also had plenty of replacement corks from previous bottles to replace the damaged one.

No the cork remains didn't alter the properties of the rum, just it's looks and my opinions of the bottle. Cork should be on the list of things to grade a bottle of Rum. The ease of opening and characteristics of the cork should be a category. Granted I know cork usage is a time honor tradition, even the cheapest bottle of "whatever" would come with a good cork.

Just venting my frustration of shoddy corks party2.gif

It's just part of the joy that is rum. I know some people that will store newly purchased bottles on their side to moisten the cork and hopefully prevent this tragedy. It's risky because the bottle might leak, but some people swear by it. Personally, I don't care. I just take the cork piece out of the glass.

I love corked bottles. They really make me feel like I'm opening something special and worth whatever I just paid for it. That sense of the old ways and tradition and all that mumbo jumbo.

But quite frankly they are an outdated and primitive way to seal a bottle. There are far better ways to seal a bottle that are more effective and reliable. Really, in this day and age corks should be retired for good.

I agree, for the traditionalist, maybe a rubber stopper included to make you feel better while you work that bottle over.

Absolutely correct!

i have in front of me (i am doing write ups)10 bottles with corks- 1 with a synthetic so we wont count that one- 9 bottles, that i just opened and only 1 wasn't problematic in some way or another-- a little better than 10% success rate. i open 10 -20 corked bottles a week and i would say that these 9 are a better lot than usual.

Corks are a stupid antiquated method that need to be replaced-- especially in liquor (there is a 'minor' case to be made for their use in wine). Corks suck.

Wow a start of a anti cork movement g()fy

I like cork like things, like the Zaya, it has a plastic topper and a cork bottom. And the Capt Morgan Private stock, solid wood topper and a cork bottom. The twist top is nice to, very functional.
