Thanks for the link. The judges are certainly big fans of Angostura rums.

The presence of several rums which haven't yet been available in this country (as far as I know) is particularly noteworthy. Just looking at the Extra-Aged Rum category, we'd particularly love to sample the following:

Ron Abuelo 12 Year Rum

Admiral Rodney 12 Year Old Rum

Bacardi Reserva Limitada

English Harbour 10 Year Old Reserve Rum

English Harbour 1981 Vintage 25 Year Old Rum

Mount Gay 1703 Rum

Alma de Bohemio 15 Year Old Rum

however poorly some of them may have fared with this panel of judges. Several of these rums list U.S. importers. :D

Yes that's it.

I just ordered 2 of the Savanna rums which were awarded.

I've heard good things about the Savanna offerings. Wonder when we will see anything of them in Northern Europe...

Let us know when you get them, and share your thoughts. drooling2.gif

Ron Abuelo 12 Year Rum

Ron Abuelo makes a 12yr old Rum???? After living in Panama for two years and traveling there often for years I have never seen this Rum before. I'm glad I'm going again at the end of the month as I 'need' to find this one.

Let's hope it's available there and not just an "Export" to certain markets!

How about the Ron Abuelo 12 Year Old Seth? It appears to have the same distributor as the two Ron Abuelo rums which you already carrry.

Bad news for Seagram's

According to this morning's "Huffington Post" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/19/brazilian-waxes-may-be-ba_n_176824.html New Jersey (USA) might ban the Smooth Brazilian all together.

Oops - maybe I read that wrong?

It's an outrage! At least they're not banning the new rum.

I have no reason to think that Miami or South Beach will ban the rum....or the procedure....Gracias Adios.

I was a little shocked to read that the new Mount Gay 1703 (Extra Extra Old) faired only a bronze medal. I know its all subjective but you'd figure it would rate higher than that especially when the Extra Old did better. Still cant wait to try it my self and decide, that is the only way to decide ;-)

I wouldn't take the results too seriously. The judges appear to have a particular taste profile in mind (Angostura?). The two English Harbor rums, the 10 Year Old and 1981 25 Year Old also received Bronze medals. It is also hard to fathom how Santa Teresa 1796 would not rank higher than Angostura 1919, for example. The relativity of taste was never more clear. Alternatively we'd all be trying to acquire the same rums. glass.gif

Thanks rumdog for bringing up the availability of the Ron Abuelo 12 Year Old again. We are such big fans of the 7 Year Old (and the 5 Year Old for mixing) that the 12 Year Old sounds particularly inviting.

BTW the Mount Gay description for 1703 actually lists the rums involved as "each aged ten to 30 years". That is to say that Mount Gay is charging $120 a bottle for rum which many would describe as "ten year old rum". These remarks are directed to the "interesting" price point exclusively and not to the quality of said rum, which we expect to be quite high.

Is this the beginning of a price readjustment for rum in general, or just the continuation of a trend?

We will, of course, be very interested in your impression of the MG 1703 rumdog. Perhaps Mount Gay will sneak a bottle into the SF MOR Fest next week to give the rest of us a taste. :D

I don't know Deidre Woollard and this is the first time I've read of any of his spirit reviews, but from the sounds of that review he isn't familiar with the Mount Gay line of rums. As for the San Francisco Spirits Competition, there are some very qualified judges judging that competition, but it also appears that the results don't always represent their experience.
