I picked up a bottle of this on my way home from a friends at the West View LS in North Van today. It's a Nice Rum with very strong Vanilla flavors... A nice change but not what I prefer over the old Favorites, though it's still a great Rum.. Whats that saying... "Variety Is The Spice Of Life" cheers.gif

I also bought a Bottle of 'Ron Angostura 1824'. I have yet to crack it.

I picked up my first bottle of the 1919 a few weeks back and initially didn't like it, but I've now had 3 glasses on different nights and it's really growing on me. My wife said the whole house smelled of Vanilla last night after one glass!
I also bought the 1824 but I think I'll wait for some special occasion to try that one.

I've heard mixed reviews on the 1824, love it or hate it. Rumelier had some good info on it at his site if I remember right.

I like both of these rums, and have written about them before, but they follow a distinct profile. A brief recap; the 1919 is like 1824 on trainer wheels. All of 1919's flavors are amplified in the 12 year rum, which has especially strong notes of leather and tobacco as well as the vanilla. If you like one, you're likely to enjoy the other, but where 1919 can be...not exactly subtle but at least not overwhelmingly powerful in respect to it's flavors, the 1824 smacks you in the face with them.

I have cracked my bottle of 1919 a few times now, and it still hasn't grown on me! I just can't get past the sweet artificial vanilla flavour. I haven't tried the 1824 yet, but if what Lew Barrett says about it is true, then I'll save my money! the 1919 "smacks me in the face" so the 1824 might just knock me flat with what I consider an unpleasant vanilla taste. Its strange because I really do like vanilla, but this stuff just doesn't taste "real".

The 1919 definitely divides opinion. I think it is a great sipper, and whilst it mixes quite well the results are a little too sweet for me. I therefore tend to only sip this rum and use others for mixing. As somebody else has commented elsewhere on this forum, the 1919 makes for a great after-dinner rum.

I've had both of these brought back for me from Trini and then i have received them as gifts from people bought at the LCBO here in Toronto! I have to say that the ones brought from the Isle of Trini were different, they seemed so much smoother especially the 1919.
I typically mix with a splash of coke and always three cubes of ice, the 1824 was pretty smooth but as mentioned quite the aroma of vanilla surrounded the area where my glass was!
I think it will grow on you as it did on me, the 1824 that is!!

Both of these rums have enjoyed a lot of discussion in the past. I like them both, and find they both conform to Ed's saying "I enjoy the rum that's in my glass." Whereas the vanilla is a dominant aroma, I find lots of other flavors to explore with both of these, and consider 1824 a worthwhile rum to pair with cigars as well. But there's little doubt that they are both different from most rum profiles, and highly "perfumed." I do think 1824 particularly requires some familiarity, but I took to it straight off, and then tried 1919 after it as a result of my favorable reaction to 1824, not the other way around.
Robert Burr would tell you that 1824 does divide opinion, but that many highly experienced rummies consider it one of the finest quaffs on the market. At least he told me that!

For me the 1919 is the "Veggie Mite" or "Marmite (in the UK)" of the rum world. You either love it or hate it...

There also seem to be a few of us who start off hating 1919 and end up in the other camp. Although I haven't yet learned to love Angostura 1919, the shift from distaste to enjoyment came as a complete surprise. Perhaps sipping after a hot curry dinner caused the perceptual shift, but it seems persistent.

Having spent a bit time in Ole' Blighty some years back I can say I would rather spread a bit of the 1919 across my morning toast rather than a slather of Marmite.

They are both well made, but I have to admit I prefer the 24. If I am after a clean vanilla flavor, I might choose Oronoco instead. They both carry a bit of a "candied" consistency and flavor, the 19 more so. The 24 is much more complex, with a more varied range of flavors. The 24 can pair well with a spicy, peppery cigar, like a Don Pepin Blue or a La Flor Double Ligero.
