Hi all

I've been trying out a few different rums for quite a while mainly the Havana Clubs, Salior Jerrys and Morgan Spice among other which i seem to have forgotten the name of (possible related to who much rum i drank). Anyway I've got a weekend away and thought i would treat myself to a bottle of one of these 3:

Havana Club 7yo
Angostura '1919' 8.yo.
Sailor Jerry (i know i shouldn't really include this for comparison as it spiced but i though i would throw it into the mix)

There all around the same price which woudl you suggest?

Or if anyone else could recommend a different variety for a simular price, feel free.

Given the choice of those 3 I would go for the Havana Club 7. It's a good tasting rum, albeit not one of my favorites. It spends a lot of time at the back of the cupboard. I picked up a bottle of the 1919 recently and I wasn't impressed. It had a sweet, artificial vanilla taste to it that doesn't appeal to me. I have never paid much attention to the spiced rum, but I sampled the Sailor Jerry's once, and I was surprised how tasty it was. It would probably make a good cocktail!

It really depends on how you are planning to drink the rum. If you are mixing drinks, any of them will do fine. If you are looking to sip it like a good scotch, then spending a little more can get you a much better tasting spirit.

It just so happens that I had a guys rum weekend last week. I went armed with a bottle of Goslings Black Seal for mixing with coke and ginger ale. I also brought a bottle of Cruzan Single Barrel for sipping. We also had plenty of Appleton VX and Old Sam Demerera on hand. I ended up killing the Cruzan single-handed on Saturday night.....party1.gif

I don't know anything about the UK pricing of rum, but check out some of these rums for comparative pricing. The following generally range from $25 - $45 in the US when I see them. The following are most of my current favorites.

- Santa Teresa 1796
- Diplimatico Reserva Exclusiva
- English Harbour 5
- Mount Gay Extra Old
- Fundacion XX Aсos
- Don Q Grand Aсejo
- Ron Aсejo Pampero Aniversario

Having only tried the 1919, I can't offer much advice, although the HC7 naturally appeals to those of us in the U.S. who have never had the pleasure.

It is curious that the favorites list posted by leisure master is substantially similar to one I'd post if pressed to do so, with a few exceptions. In our neck of the woods ED21 is preferred over the much-loved ED15 (we'd keep the 15 on the list as well) and Don Q Grand Añejo is yet to be seen, but highly anticipated. glass.gif

The other exception is Pampero Aniversario. We purchased our first bottle a few months ago after enjoying this rum the few times it had been tasted at a local spot. The bottle we acquired has not, however made the same favorable impression. It has a level of bitterness far beyond the "manly" level found in many favored rums. Has the blend changed in the last few years, or did we get a bad bottle?

A recent addition to our favorites list is the delectable Ron Atlantico. Have you tried it leisure master? Has it reached across the pond yet walters2001?

Many have mentioned ED15 and ED 21. They also produce a 12 year old and a 5 year old as well as ED Dark. Any of these would also be great rums to try as they are much more reasonably priced.

The Hc 7 is my choice. See if you can find Barbancourt 5 Star. It is usually one of the best values you can find.

Totally agree on the younger ED offerings. I think the ED12 is one of the best values in the entire rum category but we can't get it here (so I stock up everytime I head back east). Never tried the ED 5 though, how does that compare to the others?

Agreed, I do like the ED 21 more than the ED 15, but I generally find it to be around twice the price (like $65 versus $30). To me, the ED 15 is the kind of rum that is good enough to sip but not too expensive or delicate to mix with either. I think I go through more ED 15 than any other rum (try it in a daiquiri - 2oz ED15/.75oz lime/.5oz SS).

Do keep an eye out for the Don Q. Very nice stuff.

I believe I have tried this rum but don't seem to have a bottle on hand to refresh my memory. With your endorsement I will now be looking for one. Just another reason this is a great website!
