I am a very happy man today because last night I stumbled upon a bottle of English Harbour Extra Old. I was actually planning to get the Mount Gay XO, but as soon as I saw the English Harbour I knew I had to get that instead, this based on the fact that it is discontinued and supposed to be an excellent rum for the price, a real one-off opportunity. Everything I've ever read about this rum is positive, but I never actually thought I'd find any. I considered it consigned to the history books. I love the 5 year old but unfortunately the 10 year old Reserve and the 1981 are a little out of my price range.
I can't find much information about this rum either on MOR or anywhere else on the internet. I know it was discontinued some time ago but I don't know when, and I also vaguely remember reading somewhere that the same rum was used for the 1981 vintage (only not aged as long). I don't know how accurate this information is though.
I'm delighted to find this rum as I've long thought I'd never get the chance to try it. I paid only a fifth of what it would have cost for the 1981, and for me this is probably as close I'm going to get to trying the 1981.
If anybody has any information or opinions on this rum, I'd be grateful to hear them.
