Before I delve into the finer rums later in evening I like to start out with a mixed drink, usually a rum and cola. Lately I've been experimenting with some premium colas and came across Boylan's Sugar Cane Cola. I gave a lot of thought today of the perfect rum to add to it and settled on FDC 7 YR with a little lime. This has to be the best rum and cola I've had to date! The Boylan's has such a unique and natural taste, I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to the mass producers. I'm thinking my next rum to try it with will be HC 7 YR.
Anyone else have some unique rum and cola's that they really enjoy??

The drier FDC is a great combo with the the Boylan's! I tried the Doorley's XO and had a great rum and coke tonight. glass.gif

I will settle for regular run of the mill coke cola if out but....there's no way im using it in my house or any event I can bring my own stuff to. I detest corn syrup and always go for a soda that has natural sugar cane as the sweetener. I usually go with the 365 brand from whole foods for all my soda mixer needs and I find a huge difference. As for making a cube libre here's what I like. Fill a glass with ice cubes, squeeze half a key lime over then discard lime, pour in Don Q Cristal half way up, then pour natural cola for the remaining half, squeeze the other half of the key lime and place in the drink. Wait 2mins, then stir, and walla.

RonJames, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to corn syrup. Several other members, Michael comes to mind, share this gastonomical philosophy.
And, wow! What nicely executed drink. I will build that one tonight. glass.gif

I agree completely the better the Cola the better the drink.
As of late I've been adding Tonic Water and find it to be a good addition.

That does sound like a nice drink; I'll take a look for the 365 brand around here. I can't get the Don Q Cristal locally; any good substitutes?
I'm also going to give the Boylan's a try with the Doorly's XO, we'll be getting that here within the next week or two.

Ya for me, I kind of raise my eye brows when people knock the cube libre. It's easy to make a good one...but there is an art to making a great onedrooling.gif As for a sub for the Don Q Cristal, go for any spanish white, bacardi superior will do in pinch (although I am cringing while writing this) I've heard good things from Rumdog about the Flor de Cana whites. Brugal makes a good, and inexpensive white. Actually, Vanpatt I just remembered that your canadian, dump the other whites I was telling you about and make one with the Havana Club anejo blanco, I've never had it and would love to hear if you liked it. This has got me thirsty and excited.

laughing.gif Yes. I understand the reflex. But, please remember the suggestion applies to mixing it.
Also, yes, I second the Brugal! Which brings to mind the Palo Viejo, the best "bottom-shelfer" anywhere. MoR'er Scottes led me to this one years ago.

Anyone else have some unique rum and cola's that they really enjoy??Agree this is an excellent combo. FdC7 seems to be a perfect match for quality cola. Everything else I sort taste the barrel & char with the said rum.

Well I can't say that I have ever tried any "boutique colas", and I am not even sure you can get many around here. I do insist on Coke, and not Pepsi, RC or other generic colas. As for which rum to use, I have a couple of favorites: Goslings Black Seal is my main one. Black Seal and Coke has actually got my wife hooked, and she doesn't normally like rum and coke. Another favorite of mine is Matusalem Classico. When I first tried the Classico I didn't like it at all, but when I started mixing it with coke I realized that it made a very tasty and unique drink. (unfortunately we can't seem to get Matusalem around here anymore.) I think with both of those rums their advantage is that they have a flavor profile that is able to stand up to the coke and not get buried by it as other, more subtle rums do.

I gave the Havana Club Anejo Blanco a try tonight with Boylan's and quite enjoyed it. I typically use this rum only for Mojito's and never really thought to try it with cola. It's much drier than the FDC 7 YR which works well as the Boylan's itself is very sweet. I think I'll pick up a bottle of the FDC 4 YR White Extra Dry tomorrow as I've never tried this one but it also sounds like a good option.

lololol, you're making me jealous Vanpatt. Im gonna have to give that one a try if I can get to a place to try HC. Thanks for humoring me and giving it a try. I find that if I can't try something and learn something, heck other forum members can and then I get to hear the responses glass.gif

Mexican Coca Cola made with cane sugar is readily available down here. To me, the cane sugar Coke responds much better to addition of lime than does corn syrup Coke for some reason. Unfortunately, the cane sugar Coke is a caloric-laden luxury that must be enjoyed infrequently - so Coke Zero is the everyday choice.

I always found the Coke a Cola or Pepsi in Panama very very sweet. I guess that is because they are made with cane suga. Or I assume they are anyways... I never like the sugar to over power the rum.
What a dilemma we have.

I don't worry about the calories. Actually I had given soda up for over a decade before I had found rum. I now go with the doctrine that I only have soda when Im drinking rum, the rest of the day I drink water with a splash of juice so I hydrate better so I can, you got it, drink more rum when I get home. glass.gif

Now that is proper planning! I've got to start planning my days better to get the most out of my rum in the evening.

Mexican coke is the best. Accept no substitutes.
