Whats the future of Bacardi 8?

Hey gang I should have thought of this earlier but with the bahama distillery being sold off what is bacardi planning to do with Bacardi 8? Is it going to be made in another location or are they going to discontinue the product all together? Actually while Im in a thoughtful mood what are the differences between bacardi 8 and there new reserva product?

When Rumelier, Federico and I were on the VIP Bacardi tour we were told that the production of the "8" would be brought back to Puerto Rico.

We'll have to wait and see if it actually happens.

When I was in Nassau recently they were shipping out the last of the rum before finally closing the doors next month. The closest I got to the rum was watching the tanker trucks full of rum driving through the main gate to the dock, where the rum is shipped from. I think the reason it was produced in Nassau was because of the very strict ageing laws in Puerto Rico that to do not economically encourage extended ageing of their rums. No "topping up" is allowed either, which is allowed in many countries. I guess we will have to wait and see how it all ends up, but these guys have being making rum for almost 150 years in many countries, so I'm sure they have it all figured out!!!
The old "Product of the Bahamas" bottles may be worth collecting though.

Then my guess would be that the last rum out of the Bahamas Facility was either,

1) Sold off to another concern.
2) Shipped off to another Bacardi Facility (Mexico)?
3) Possibly both. Depending upon what stocks they ended up with.

One thing that is interesting is that the closure of the Bahama Plant seems to coincide with the roll out of the Bacardi Reserva Limitada. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

At any rate, I like the "8" and have a supply...Hey, Maybe it'll show up on the auction site here sometime soon.

lololol, I new you two would have the answers after operation rum tour in the san juan area. How is the Reserva limitada made? If my memory is correct it is aged 12yrs and is almost their answer to the Don Q Gran Anejo.

Jim, possibility #4 is that the rum was shipped to Europe as most of the rum in the Bahamas usually was and bottled in their plants over there.
Ron, Jim could be right with the roll out of the Reserva to more markets but there is a big difference in the Don Q to the Reserva, both in price and taste. I am going to have to leave some room in my suitcase for some more Don Q when I go down to PR again in May for the Taste of Rum!!!
