Bought a bottle from Sams (Chicago) today, just because it was the only rum there I hadn't tried. Hmmmm. It was SOOOO carmelly, I have to think it's just fermented sugar cane mixed 50/50 with caramel flavoring.
Anyone else have an opinion on Indian-distilled Old Monk?
Anyone have some way I might enjoy it in a drink?

To be honest it's a rum I enjoy best after it's taste has been masked a little. Ginger beer and a few generous shakes of Angostura help it.
Initially I think I found it interesting. Then I decided I just didn't like it and the bottle got relegated to cooking rum status. It just sits there these days and never gets touched.

I like it in a hot buttered rum in the winter. It's really, really cheap in India. I remember $3.00 a 750ml.

My wife enjoys this rum, but I do not care for it. To me the smell and taste is that of artificial sweetners.

It mixes a LOT better in cocktails than one would think. At "Drink" in Boston, they make a 1919 with it:
3/4 oz. Old Monk
3/4 oz. rye
1/2 oz. benedictine
1 oz. punt e mes
2 dashes aromatic bitters
stir and strain. Shows off the Old Monk very well. Excellent cocktail, btw.
That said, it just doesn't taste good straight, which is--I think--a fundamental flaw. So, I don't own it.
I recall that Green Street Tavern in Boston also has a drink made with Old Monk called the Deja Vu in Delhi. I'm not sure of the measurements but it had Old Monk, St. Germains elderflower liqueur, lime juice, and Bitterman’s Tiki bitters. Nice drink!
