Has anyone been drinking this stuff. I really can't get over it! It's GREAT neat/rocks, and you don't feel guilty making an AWESOME cocktail with it. What a value at less than $20/bottle! Anyone else feel the same way on this?

It's always been a favorite of mine. In the islands, it's labeled Sugar Cane Brandy.

What to mix with it? That's always been my question.

I found it made a great drink just mixed with Coke. Drank quite a bit of it when I was down in St. Thomas.

I miss that place...

I'll have to admit that I was misled by the label the first time I purchased this offering by Mt. Gay. I was under the impression that it was made from cane juice instead of molasses but have subsequently discovered this is not the case. Not sure what methods they use to differentiate this rum from the rest of their line but nonetheless, it is quite good.

Makes a lovely Daiquiri-- try using lemon juice instead of lime and adjust the sugar!

Can someone describe what this stuff actually is?

Mount Gay Silver I think is a great, caney white rum

Mount Gay Eclipse is a great aged gold rum

Mount Gay Special Reserve is an even-more-caney white-ish rum that I would compare with 10 Cane

Where does this Cane Rum fit in on the list?

It's close to the Eclipse - a younger mixing rum.

Thank you forest, it sounds like another great drink idea of yours.:)

Mount Gay Eclipse is aged for up to 2 years. Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum/Brandy is aged for up to 5 years. Mount Gay Extra Old is aged for up to 10 years. They are all made from molasses.

Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum is exactly the same as Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy. In Barbados, and other parts of the Caribbean, they are allowed to call this product brandy - that is not the case in other parts of the world!

That is why there are two different names. There is, therefore, plenty of scope for confusion. I was in a supermarket in Nevis a few years ago, and they had the Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy next to all the real brandy, and miles away from all the other Mount Gay products and other rums.HMMR

No offense intended Berbician, but it is a bit peculiar that after having made a similar age statement about Mount Gay XO in a previous thread:

Mt. Gay Extra Old -NEW- bottle (http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2289&highlight=mount+gay)

you missed the response to your statement in that thread.

Are you privy to sources of information with respect to the age of Mount Gay rums unavailable to the rest of us? If not, it might not be appropriate to state the actual age of Mount Gay XO with such confidence. If so, please correct our mistaken impression.

No offence taken, Michael. I was simply repeating what I was told at the Mount Gay Visitor Centre, in Barbados, the last time I was there. Mind you, the memory often plays tricks, especially after a large glass of the Sugar Cane Brandy.

I was only trying to say that the Sugar Cane Rum/Brandy is aged longer than the Eclipse, but not as long as the Extra Old.

With respect to age statements from distillery visitor centers I've gotten some great information and some information that I know to be just plain not true from some of the loveliest men and women I've ever had pour me a glass of rum.

It should also be noted that things change, and what might have been true a few years ago, may or may not be true today. Mount Gay Eclipse, for example, is much better rum today than it was in the mid-80s when I couldn't drink it in the islands. The blend of Extra Old Rum has also changed since it was first introduced about 1994, due in part to the availability of aged rums.

I've heard nothing but good things about it, so I'll be picking up my first bottle from Ledger Liquor Store (Berkeley, Ca) as soon as I get back in town.

You best load up on it if you find you like it. It's about to become history.

Excellent daiquiris, indeed! IMO, one of the best daiquiris ever!

Jamie, is it really going to be discontinued?

Jamie, is it really going to be discontinued?

That seems to be the consensus. Take a look at the Mount Gay website. It is no longer listed.

Since the Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum appears to be on it's way out, before I run out to hunt a bottle down,... has anyone compared it to Plantations' Grand Reserve? Both are 5 year rums from Barbados and similarly priced. The Plantation Grand Reserve is a hard rum to beat in this price range.
