I picked up a bottle of Diplomatico RE and was initially surprised by the twist cap, then saw the unique pour spout. This is the second time I have come across this type of spout and at first I did not like it. Takes a bit of getting used to but now I like the fact that is does not drip and seems to seal well.

Does anyone know the name of this spout and could this be a good replacement for corks?

The spout you have encountered is used to keep unscrupulous bartenders from refilling the bottle with lesser spirits. There are many names for this bottle closure and they are most common in Central and South America though they can be found on spirits bottles around the world.

I agree that they tend to seal the contents better than many aluminum closures that ten to have their threads stripped when they are reused.

The non-return caps are common throughout Europe but not in the UK. Diplomatico have just removed theirs from the new bottles for this country.

I like the way they pour when doing a simple mixed drink. However, several of my home bartending flair moves no longer work on the pour-flourish. For instance, the double reverse, lateral turn, round-the-world with shoulder to hand arm-slide no longer dispenses exactly 2 ounces.

I pour so many shots of Diplomatico I'm slow to adjust. I've forgotten there's no cap and slugged rum all over the bar several times already!

No wonder the man in the label is so serious!

I bite the top of the Diplo bottle off, and jam a Pyrat cork in there when I'm done glugging. !laughing.giflaughing.gif

Well, obviously not what I really do, but the first time I opened a bottle of Diplomatico, it confused and confounded me. But I'm easily fooled!

Diplomatico have just removed theirs from the new bottles for this country.

One can only hope they'll follow the same trend here.
