Ran into a quite expensive bottle of Mount Gay Cave Shepherd on a shelf in Barbados. Never saw it before... Anyone with some info about this one?

It's a bottle of MGXO repackaged to celebrate the centenary of the large Bajan department store, Cave Shepherd.
Good looking bottle of a great rum but MGXO nonetheless. Enjoy.

It is slightly different from the regular MG XO, more mature...

I just picked up a bottle from Harrison's in Bridgetown. Battsrock, would you say it is smoother than MGXO? Drier or sweeter?

I was always told it was exactly the same rum. Bearing in mind it was packaged several years ago, are you sure it isn't the MGXO blend that has changed in that time.........

I'd be interested in some pictures of this bottle, thanks!

Over the years, I've certainly tasted changes in the Mount Gay XO blend which isn't unusual since blending is a dynamic process and aged stock do vary.

I hope the Cave Shepherd isn't the same as MGXO, because it cost almost twice as much.

I have to say that I have been a big MGXO fan over the years...but the recent price hikes have caused me to try to some other rums. I must admit that some very fine Bajan alernatives have been Doorly's XO and RL Seale 10-year (both about 1/2 the price of MGXO)!!! Cockspur 12 is tremendous as well...just tougher to get locally.
If this Cave Shepard is twice the price of MGXO, then that puts the price point above MG 1703. I think I'll pass on hunting that one down!!!
Love me some Bajans!!!

My post may have been misleading. I found MGXO in Bridgetown for about $23, and the Cave Shepherd was about $42. The 1703 was still considerably higher and out of my price range.
By the way, the RL Seale 10 yr was about $18.50, as was the 1998 Vintage FourSquare.

It was a slightly different blend than Mount Gay XO more in terms of age of the rums composing the blend than in terms of blend formula.
Regarding the price, I think it was set up at 100 BD$ (50US$) by Cave Shepperd just because it was to celebrate their 100 anniversary and it was a limited edition with a specific bottle. Simple as that.
