As my fledgling rum trek continues I have opened a bottle of Zaya 12. This is a really enjoyable bottle. It is a Trinidad bottle and on the sweet side but not overly for my tastes. Rich and smooth, this bottle is a keeper for me.

At the moment I am enjoying a glass of Cruzan Single Barrel. This one has recently become one of my favorites. It is one that I always try to keep in stock!

I just did a little comparison between Santiago 11 and Vizcaya (http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2434) Follow the link for the report.

Cockspur VSOR with a bit of coconut water, cane syrup and key lime. The rum really comes through with a lot of flavor, the tropical flavors marry well.

Sending myself to bed after a nice pour of Barbancourt Estate Reserve 15. To me a strong citrus nose maybe a little lemon? Nice oily smoothness with a surprising bite in the finish. I'm definitely in need of more shelf space.

At the moment nothing.... although I couldn't if I wanted to. Liquor was the first to be moved to our new house. Which we just closed last Friday (the 13th).

Essentials of a move. TP, booze/beer, and a stereo!!!

At the moment I am haning out with some Appleton VX. Good stuff, real smooth.

But for the last 2 weeks I have been eating up some Sailor Jerry, been in that type of mood I guess, so tonight I decided to settle down with one of my favorites.

young0076, as a former Marine, and, in honor of your former choice, I am having the Sailor with a splash of Allspice Dram and a gentle squeeze of grapefruit. All of the aforementioned shaken hard with ice, then, strained. The result is superb.

I don't think I'd waste Allspice in that drink, though a little goes a long way.

I stopped into the Liquor store today, and of course forgot my notes (and I have a bad memory). The two bottles I was going back and forth between were the Mount Gay Extra Old and the Angostura 1824. I ended up with the Mt. Gay because I seemed to recall it got favorable reviews...
I have had so few still; I tend to compare them to my favorite which remains the Zacapa. I find this Mt. Gay a little softer in the nose, a little lighter in the flavor, maybe not as rich. It has a little more bite in the finish. But I do enjoy this pour and am not disappointed; I don't want to drink the same thing every night!

I did pick up some Cruzan Raspberry to make my wife a Raspberry Pomegranate Mojito tonight as well.

Mount Gay XO! yay.gif I find myself pouring this for myself and friends more than many other rums. We have it here in our Vons/Safeway supermarkets! The Angostura 1824 is a horse of a different color. It makes a very, very bold statement. I confess to hoarding it for myself to drink.

"hoarding" it!!! Well that’s a pretty good recommendation. I'm going to get in trouble but maybe I need to stop in again tomorrow and try another?

I got the approx recipe from the Palisades bartender in Seattle

2 oz of Cruzan Raspberry Rum
1 oz of Simple Syrup
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz pomegranate juice
4 mint leaves
I shook over ice and poured into the glass we use which I topped with 2 oz of Soda water.

My wife is happy!

Be sure to sample others from Trinidad to be sure you like the distinctive profile which many describe as vanilla-laden before laying down $$$ for the top of the line. The 1824 really does perfect the balancing act, though.

T47, good pick in the MG XO. I find it classy, unchanged, no excuses, just a great quality sipping rum, and the price for product is very reasonable IMHO.

Young, in a prior life I use to make a good pomegranate martini. Recipe...
1 part stoli cranberri, 1 part stoli raspberri, 1 part pomegranate juice, 1 part pama pomegranate liquor, shake with ice, strain, garnish with pomegranate seeds. You could switch out the vodka for rum and play around with it, heck depending on how strong the misses likes it you're better off making it to her liking anyway. Hope this helps you out.

I have shot my Rum...Booze budget for a while with these latest purchases, but this is another great one, Angostura 1824. I went off the rumdog007 "hoarding" recommendation and the tasting notes on this forum, it looked like a bottle I would enjoy and I most certainly do. Smooth nose that does not give away the deep flavor that comes through with a gentle spice that finishes very nice. This has been a nice start to the journey.

Planteurs punch but the recipe on the St. James Royal Ambre bottle. The recipe forest put out is much better but I had to give this one a try. Messed it up with too much grenadine but 1/4 the way down the rum took over and it was pleasant again.

2009 has been rough and tonight 80 Proof just didn't seem to be what I needed so I started the night with a great Bourbon, GT Stagg at 140.6 є. It does do a nice job of taking the edge off.
Do people drink the 150є rums neat or are they strictly for Punch power? I have never tried one? My favorite Bourbons tend to be the higher proof higher Rye bottles.
I have moved on to the more subtle Appleton Estate VX, this is a nice caress to send me off to sleep.

In the islands they can drink the over proof stuff by mid morning...straight. I've never tried it and instead prefer the high stuff for cooking and for punches. If you can handle it go for it, just a preference on my end. cheers.gif

Just tried Berkshire Mountain Distillers Ragged Mountain Rum with Root beer. I know sounds crazy, heck it even sounds awful, but it actually tasted pretty good. The rum is young and has an extreme butterscotch taste to it. Now I like to study history for fun and know that there is a past history in New England with Rum(colonial period) and Rootbeer(prohibition) so I thought, what the heck combine the two. I used 365 root beer(more natural stuff) with the rum and it tasted pretty good. Good night to all.cheers.gif
