rum barrels

i was reading about lark distillery in tasmania who "offer you the opportunity to lay down in bond your own barrel(s) of new fill immature whisky and brandy for either future enjoyment, or capital appreciation."

while they've not offered this service with their new rum yet, is this kind of practice common amongst rum producers as a way of raising finance?

it sounds like a nice idea. Buy a barrel and let it sit for a while.

I know that use to be case at Santa Teresa, in Venezuela,where you could buy your own barrel of rum which they would age and look after for you. You could draw rum from it at anytime at your own leisure.

Bob acquired a 195 liter barrel for us from Angostura that we're letting age. We'll take a bit out now and then, but plan to leave it resting for a long time.

I put this photo up on another thread but thought this is a more appropriate place for it. This is the said barrel aging away in front of my desk, what a great view!!! The hardest decision now is when to crack it open and start drawing from it, mind you there is plenty to go around!! It is aging at 160 proof so needs to be watered down (maybe!!). I have an empty Appleton barre sol I could fill it half full and dilute both and Robert could smuggle his back to South Florida!!! If the duties were not so high I could send it over to Rum Rennaisance in May to share with all the MOR membersyay.gif.
Now that is a good idea and be a great attraction.

I remember as a child my father and his buddies would get old rum barrels from the liquor store (I'm originally from Newfoundland and they have historically done a lot of bottling there) Not sure what liquid they put in the barrels - but they would discuss the aging process and sample from time to time. They called the resulting liquid "swish" - doubt that you could call it a "fine" spirit - likely more akin to moonshine laughing.gif

Times like this I wish my father was still with us to get the real story...

You just put water in the barrel and leave them in the sun. Turn them around everyweek. The residual alchohol leaches out. In Kentucky where I grew up, used bourbon barrels were stolen for this purpose. BTW, one could get shot for taking those barrels, too.

Two old guys from St. Vincent told me that they did the same thing back home with old rum barrels. Recession rum drinking.
