New bottle!

I had a friend return from Brazil (his home country) and bring me back a bottle.
The bottle is Janeiro O espirito Carioca. Cachaca Original para Caipirinha. 1886
I have not tried it yet. Does anyone have any info on it? I gave my friend $30 US. Was this a good deal?

Hi Squiggly...Let's start at the beginning before we figure whether your friend fleeced you or brought you a treasure. Can you post a good pic or transcribe the words on the label more closely and completely?

The label you describe does not describe the contents inside to my knowledge...But it sounds fun!

I can't help with the bottle but I can help with the translation.

Carioca is a slang word for the city of Rio de Janeiro or the people of Rio.
If a Brazilian refers to someone as a carioca, he's calling him a "homeboy"

I would translate it as "The soul of the people of Rio de Janeiro", Cachaзa for Caipirinha.

I've never heard of it, but there are thousands of cachaзa brands.

The cahiprina is the traditional drink that is made from Cachaca. If memory sers it is essentially crushed lime wedges crushed in a glass with sugar, and cachaca. When I was down there a common souvenir for sale was a cahiprina glass and a wooden pestle to crush the limes with. I saw cachaca in the store the other day and was tempted to pick some up to make some!

Yes, the caipirinha is a wonderful, simple drink. I like it as much as I do the ti punch. Granted, I like more sugar in my caipirinhas. The strong taste of rhum agricole and cachaca are tranformed by the lime. I'm no chemist, but that interaction is something quite special.

This is a 'designer' cachaзa issued by Pernod Ricard in 2005. I think it's available in some parts of mainland Europe and Brazil, obviously! The price is about right.

As for the contents, most of the cachacas that are labeled "for caipirinha" aren't aged cachaca. Since it's made for Pernod Ricard, I'd suspect that it is pretty good, but not the best of the best. But hey, if a friend brings me a bottle of rum and I'm not willing to pay the price, chances are next time I won't get a bottle and it may be something extraordinary.

In 1997, I was given a bottle of Ron Zacapa Centenario because the owner had had it around for a while on his boat. One of his friends had bought it in Guatemala while they were there and left it on his boat, fortunately for me, he was a vodka drinker. As I recall, I traded a bottle of St Lucia's best sugar cane vodka and we were both very happy.
