I recently tastes the following two La Mauny Agricole rums from Martinique and was impressed, very good and smooth rums - the XO no doubt the best agricole for my palate out of the ones tasted by me.
What was delightful was that they were void of the somewhat stingy-burning, unpleasant note that has been typically present in most of the agricoles I've tasted (like an older 1970's rhum Clement, to mention an example).
Haven't seen much mentioned about La Mauny here, is it imported to the States?
La Mauny 1998 Rum Vieux, 40%.
Nose: Very interesting, perfumy, some caramel and marzipan, almonds, rich and creamy feel to it.
Palate: Similar to the nose - again these perfumy and floral notes float around, then the marzipan sweetness comes in waves, allowing finally some roasted sugar notes to emerge.
Aftertaste: Not very long, light and sweet.
Comments: An interesting agricole, quite floral and light but pleasant. Reasonably sweet but flavourful palate.
La Mauny XO, 40%
Nose: Wow, very very different from previous (the 1998) - dark & deep, aromatic, with extreme finesse - like an old cognac (closest thing I can think of). Balanced but not overpowering, very pleasant.
Palate: Superbly balanced, a real blenders' artpiece this one! Seductively easy to sip down, it is indeed quite cognac-like, with a hint of wood tannins reminding of the older distillates this no doubt has in it. On the dry side (meaning it is not sweet like Zacapa) and amen to that. Complex flavours of dried tropical fruits mix in, but everything is just so well in balance. A true sipper.
Aftertaste: Quite long and warming, smooth as anything.
Comments: No doubt for my liking the best agricole I have come across, age and blending giving it amazing balance. It is not the most powerful or spicy rum (thinking of Demerara for comparison), but certainly one I would not mind sipping after a good meal near the fireplace. A classic beauty.
