View Full Version : Tulum, Mexico
Hi everyone,
I'm going back to Mexico next April. I was there last August, and know pretty much what's on sale at Cancun's Airport.
It will be my first time in Tulum, though, and I was wandering if I could get some information about rums available in town. I won't be able to shop in Cancun (except the airport, obviously) or Playa del Carmen. Last time I was able to find the Mocambo 20 and would not mind buying it again. It seems other Mexican rums of interest include Porfidio and Los Valientes.

Last time I was in Tulum, there was nothing but a flea market of small vendors. I seem to remember buying rum in Akumal.
Last time I was in that area of Mexico...I did most of my shopping in Playa del Carmen or on Cozumel. I didn't find anything in Tulum or Akumal.
In Playa and Cozumel I found FDC 12 year, Mocambo Anejo, Havana Club, and Ron Botran.
Los Valientes is a brilliant Mexican rum, and is also available in the UK now from Bibendum.
There's a very informative review of it on the IPbartenders website.
If you want more details, feel free to contact me: wlowe@bibendum-wine.co.uk

Usually, that is not a good sign. But there are exceptions. As they used to say in Barbados, we drink the best and export the rest.

Unfortunately, that isn't an uncommon situation where tourist shops are selling export rums.

Los Valientes Rums are actually very good. They are produced as a private label by the same company that produces Mocambo.
Like Jesus M said, I can also confirm that Los Valientes is only exported.
I'd be very happy to see these rums in Australia. For anyone interested her are my tasting notes:

My personal favorite was the 15 year old one.

When I was in Playa del Carmen 2 years ago I picked up the Mocambo 20 yr Art edition and D'Aristi 10 yr. I do also remember seeing lots of Havana Club around.
I'm heading back there next week and I'm hoping I can restock both bottles since they're now empty. The Mocambo was a little rough out of the gate, but it grew on me. The D'Aristi was a nice light rum that I had no complaints about.
