I was going to pick up some banana rum this weekend for some drinks but wondered if any of you can recommend a brand. Cruzan, Malibu and Whalers are the ones that come to mind.

I have heard nothing but good things from the Cruzan, but like the others have said on here, try it and if you don't like it, go with the next. I have done some reading and like the things other don't give high marks. So it depends on your taste buds.
Like me now for example. I am here sipping on a nice cool glass of Captain Morgans Private Stock. I have a sweet tooth tonight and this stuff will do the trick for me.
Good luck

I surprised myself by enjoying the Ricardo Banana Rum at the recent Ministry Of Rum tasting competition in New Orleans. It's a rich banana flavor, but also a rich dark rum flavor that does the job. I see that bottle from time to time on the MOR site on the right margin.
The Cruzans flavored are always good. So are the Brinley's Gold, but I think they only make coffee, coconut, mango, lime and vanilla.
Also, consider putting a real ripe banana in the blender for a fresh banana puree.

Thanks for the replies. After looking into what's available here I think I may try to make my own. Does not look too complicated and should yield some more natural flavor.

Tortuga also has a banana flavored rum. Interestingly enough, it is an 80 proof rum, where most flavored rums are not.
I find this rum rather strong and harsh. The banana flavor is not at all subtle, and at least in any drink I tried it in, it was overpowering.

Cruzan banana rum is my favorite flavored rum — I stockpile it when it's in stock at the local liquor store (the Malibu version is gross):
I like to make a twist on the banana daiquiri with it:
-2 oz. Cruzan Banana rum
-1 oz. fresh lime juice
-3/4 oz. orange curacao
-1/4 oz. or so Luxardo maraschino liqueur
maybe a splash of orgeat
Shake like hell with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish by floating a lime wheel on top.

Thanks for the recommendation. My attempt to make banana rum was a failure so I'll give the Cruzan and your recipe a try. Looks very tasty!

What went wrong with your attempts to make the stuff?
I had reasonably results simply infusing a chopped up banana in Mt. Gay Eclipse, adding a few cloves, and letting it sit for a week. Don't think I added any sugar.
The banana seemed to give it an odd 'slimy' mouth feel - probably less of an issue to those used to consuming cocktails that contain egg-white. The taste was great though.
I was thinking using dried bananas could avoid the odd mouth feel.

Sorry if off topic chaps, but I saw the term 'Banana' and though I'd post a great recipe for a good summer garden drink.
Banana Colada
3-4 Frozen bananas, slices
Half cup Golden Rum
Half cup Coconut milk/cream
Half cup Double Cream
2 cups of Pineapple juice
Put all contents in juicer/blender. Serve with Pineapple wedge.
We had these in Mauritius late last year but they weren't as good as mine. My mate got me up behinmd the bar to show them how it was made and they went down a treat. The bar peeps loved it compared to there own.

That is a good Idea! I think I will give that a try too.
