A friend that knows I like rum (rhum) just brought back a packet of orange arrange'. The instructions say to mix it with 1L of agricole and cane syrupp. I wanted to know what was the best agricole that I could buy in the USA to mix it with. I have no experience with this, but it sounds like fun to at least try. She said it was like no other drink in the world. I just hate that if I do it right, I have to wait at least a month to try it.

Ellis34, what is orange arrange'? Thanks!
La Favorite, Rhum JM, and Neisson are the best avaiable here in the US, IMO. They are all AOC agricoles. Another rum forum seems to be on a wild tear waging war on the AOC appellation, but give them a try and decide for yourself. I find the above cited rhums as something very different in character and taste. There may be other "agricultural rums" (some apply this moniker to rums made from sugar cane syrup) out there which you should try. My intention is not to rile the angry man in a kayak and open this can of worms again. But, there is no dispute that the Rhum Agricole appellation is applied to a certain group of rhums that meet published requirements. I believe that you will find them a taste unto themselves.

you have a number of good choices among the white and gold rhums agricole, such as Depaz, La Favorite, Clement and JM, depending on what you can find in your area.
Here's a link to some brands I've tried.

If I could only buy one my preference is the La Favorite Blanc

There are a number of choices, as mentioned before. I have tried anything available in the states, and although I am not sure what you are mixing, you might try Neisson Blanc or Amber. Btmup.gif

i am supposed to mix one liter of agricole rhum with 10cl of cane syrup and the contents of the package. It is to make a kind of infused rum (I think) the directions are all in French. After mixing all of these, I am to allow it to sit for at least one month and it can last for up to years (it says). My friend was raised there and said that her family use to always have it around. I take it that it is almost like an orange rum liqueur. I just wanted to give it a try.

Shrubbs are old family recipes for flavored spirits. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, orange is a popular flavor, together with some spices. In American, home-made raspberry schrubbs were quite popular 100 to 300 years ago.

Apparently raspberry and other fruit shrubs are still being made:

These were recommended by Gary & Mardee Regan in "New Classic Cocktails", sound delightful, but haven't yet been tried. glass.gif
