Matured Batavia arrak!

Hi there everyone!

I am new in this forum, and have some question.

A friend of my sister lives in Holland, and coming to Sweden for a visit. I am gonna ask her to buy me a bottle of Batavia arrak. Now! Do they sell matured arrak in Holland? I would like to have one that one can enyoy straight like a good Rum! This van Oosten Batavia arrak that is white!, how is that one!? Tasting notes someone!? I have a great intrest in Rum, but i have developt a intrest in Batavia arrak to (without even drinking the actual spirit!)

But i love the arrak taste. Here in Sweden have Punch which contains arrak, and something called Arraksboll, a sort of cookie flavoured with arrak. /Johan

This batavia arrak is not really to be enjoyed straight, its quite harsh. I think its better enjoyed in either the punsch or in cocktails.

I dont know if its aged or not? anyone?

But due to its quite harsch taste it looks to me like its not been aged or aged for very long.

But some are! I have read that they have up to 70yo arrak in werehouses in Holland. Here in Sweden we have a brand of punsch that contains 7 yo bataviaarrak, and 7yo Jamaican rhum. /Johan

To Ed's point, Batavia Arrack is not aged in the sense we know with rum. There is typically a nominal amount of time in the large wood vats post distillation - can be up/around 6 months - but after that it's usually steel tanks for shipping out. You will pick up some interesting notes from the hardwood - a teak variety (it's Indonesia, after all), but don't look to the flavors you expect from oak. There are odd lots of aged Batavia Arrack out there, but it's not by design that it's aged!
