Hello my friends! A couple of my dearest friends are off to Barbados over the Thanksgiving. They are going to be especially nice and return with some rum for me. I am very familiar with most rums available on Barbados, but my question is, what rums should I absolutely have that can not be aquired in the USA? Your inputs would be greatly appreciated!gzzg

Yes, I tried some as well at the Rumfest, and it was very good. It must be quite expensive as the portions on offer were very small. St Nicholas Abbey itself is well worth a visit - it's in the north of Barbados, and I would assume that the distillery can also be visited.
Here's another vote for St. Nicholas Abbey. This was a very popular rum at the UK Rum Fest and currently it's unavailable anywhere outside of Barbados. We'll have a review up at Rum Connection over the next few weeks.

The Abbey rum is a 10 year old rum and they only purchased the abbey in 2006. If you look in there brochure it tells you who distills the rum for them and shows you the barrels with his name on. He was also attending the rumfest.
It was a great looking rum bottle but unfortunately my suitcase was full and my pockets were empty after 10 days in the UK.
Another rum from Barbados that was interesting was the Mount Gilboa Pot Still Rum. A very unique rum that is only available in the duty free stores in Barbados for about $US50 and is made only from rum produced in pot stills with no caramel added, by direct descendants of Aubrey Ward (you see his name on every bottle of Mount Gay Rum). Was lucky enough to snag a bottle of this as it is not available in the UK yet, but should soon be.

I agree with Bob about Mount Gilboa. Here is a fine rum that's going to evolve into a legend of it own. Don't leave the island without samples of Richard Seale's 10 year old and Doorly's XO, not to mention FourSquare spiced rum.

What a great looking site that Rum Connection is - how come I haven't stopped by there before? And it sounds like you were at the Fest this weekend. Did you enjoy yourself my friend??
Paul, Glad you like the site, mate. Please stop in often!
We very much enjoyed ourselves at the Uk Rum Fest. Drank plenty of outstanding rum and mingled with good people. Already looking forward to next year. Cheers.

I just spoke with Larry Warren from St. Nicholas Abbey and they hope to be distilling their own rum by next year. It will be an agricole rum. He says he will be bringing some samples to next years rumfest along with some samples of their rum blended with a molasses rum. Paul can I reserve my place at the front of the line and perhaps I will find the seminar room next time around!!

Although I managed to find the seminar room, it was only when I got there that I realised that there was a lift.HMMR
I was hoping to meet you and find out more about the Turks & Caicos Islands. Maybe next year.

I'm not sure what the crystal ball says for next year, I might be moving back to the Bahamas if I can find a similar job that encourages me to drink rum!! It has got too expensive to live down here. I had fun in the UK though, seeing family and friends and drinking loads of rum at the fest. I was checking peoples name tags to see if I recognised anybody, but only saw Mr.Hamilton, Mr.Burr and Mr.Burrel. Hopefully will see you at the next one or in Miami??

Well, I hope the two of you get to meet in the near future! Now, stop
high jacking my thread! (tongue in cheek)glass.gif
Any more suggestions for rum from Barbados? Or, are there any rums available from other Islands, that are obtainable in Barbados, that are not available here in the US that are must have?

I found the Banks XM 10 in a supermarket in Barbados. That's not in the states and it's gold

Sorry, back to the topic.
ESA Field is the most popular white rum on the island. Olde Brigand is a nice treat too, as is Stades. Falernum is widely available and a staple of most rum shops. Coyopa is from Barbados, but not sure if it is still available. RL Seale's 10 Year Old is fun. I drank mainly one of my favourites while in Barbados, Mount Gay Extra Old, it was so nice to be lying in a hammock at our guest house, sipping a fine rum and listening to the Atlantic waves crashing in on the shore.
As small size bottles are very popular in Barbados maybe your friends should buy as many different ones as possible, then you get to taste more than just one or two rums.

Isn't Banks a Demeraran rum that is bottled in Barbados?

Apologies for my post election night delirium. I was confusing DIH with DDL, which maintains a bottling plant on St Kitts.

Rum Runner,
I think you might be getting confused because Banks Beer is made in both Guyana and Barbados. DIH (in Banks DIH) stands for d'Aguiar's Industries and Holdings. The late Peter d'Aguiar was a Guyanese businessman/politician who was leader of the United Force in the 1960s. He foolishly agreed to join a coalition government with the malevolent Forbes Burnham's PNC (People's National Congress) in 1964. He quickly realised his mistake, but by then it was too late, and the rest is history.

Thanks for the clarification there. I was aware that Banks had a bottling facility there and thought they may be bottling the rum also.
Thanks too, for adding a bit of colour to the history of the family!

Thank you Gentlemen for your continued inputs. I do have Doorly's, Mount Gay XO and Sugar Cane Rum, and Coyopa. Does anyone know if the R.L. Seales rum is still avaiable on line? It used to be, but I cannot remember which site. I would prefer to purchase that here in the states, and ask my friends to return with the others.

I haven't seen the 10 Year, crooked neck bottle, for a few months. I bought the last 2 at Mission Liquors in Pasaden and they told me, when I was paying, that they could not get it anymore.

Royal Mile Whiskies in the UK have it, I am about to order one. It was at the rumfest in the UK and it was great to taste it with the producer himself.

RL Seale is going through some changes in regards to US distribution. I expect this situation to change next year. In the meantime, the rum is maturing in Barbados.
