Anyone like beer?

I never liked beer until I started getting into it these past few months. Rum has taken hold as my current focus again, though.

The other night I had a craving for a beer that I had tried once before. I poured some Gulden Draak as a crude pair with some BBQ chicken pizza. It was more just like I was getting some dinner at the market and that's where the beer was as well.

I thought if the forum members here like beer and also like rum, this is probably a beer that would be well-recieved. Even at 10.5% alcohol, it's masked or rather balanced very well as not to overpower.

I just thought I'd get the ball rolling on some discussion and see where this goes. Another favorite of mine is from Belgium as well and is the Westmalle Trappist Tripel.

I'm still quite wet behind the ears with regards to beer, but the next bottle I intend to try is Pliny the Elder, which is a double IPA from Russian River Brewing Company. I'm kind of selective with my bitter beers, but this is supposed to be one of the best IPAs out there.

I absolutely detest beer. It's the most disgusting, repulsive, nauseous beverage ever invented. How anyone can like it is completely beyond me.

Spoken like a true Englishman....Beer is foul...Ale is another story..I have been a CAMRA supporter since the early "80's..My Favourite ale has been Hook Norton from Banbury, famous for it's cakes and traditional tower brewery.

I love beer....mostly stouts, porters, & ales, but I do enjoy all types! Sam Adams & New Belgium are my home base, as are the Michelob Porter and AB's American Ale. I am most recently impressed by Lion Stout from Sri Lanka....excellent unsweetened chocolate undertone. Weihenstephaner is also excellent, especially the Korbinian! I am fortunate to live near several excellent micro-breweries, (Nimbus, Gentle Ben's, & Thunder Canyon).

I don't personally like Stella Artois. It's like the Budweiser of Belgium (i.e. not very good).

If you like stouts Jerry, look out for the next batch of The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery. It's an imperial stout and supposed to be one of the best.

Thanks! I'm partial to imperial stout and I already like Deschutes porter! I'll keep an eye out for it.

It's one of their specialty brews, so it may be harder to find than others, and will definitely be more expensive.

My friends always seem to have a six pack of Black Butte Porter in their fridge. I've heard good things about the regular Obsidian Stout as well.

Plus, sometimes you just need something cold that you can drink with dinner as opposed to sip like the fine rums I have been purchasing!

Welcome to the forums Jason! I totally agree with you about beer. There are so many different styles which vary from region to region and country to country, you can never really get bored as there is so much stuff to try. It's just a pity that in most parts of the world this great variety is rarely embraced.

I'm thinking of brewing beer myself in the near future, but I'm still at the research stage. How did you get started and how successful have you been? What kind of beer style do you brew? Is it your own recipe?

I love the brewskis, as my blog attests. I was at a CAMRA event last March, and it was pretty sweet. Since then, I've been pouring ale down the hatch with surprising regularity. I even have a Stone Vertical Epic '03 sitting in my cellar mellowing out.

Haha the Vertical Epics. Is it true you're supposed to cellar all of them until 12.12.12 and then drink them in order that they were released?

As I told Ed already, I'm excited for the next batch of Deschutes Brewery's The Abyss imperial stout. I'm hoping to go to their new brewpub here and sample it on draught.
