There's a new rum glass (http://www.rumfest.co.uk/rumfest/html/new%20rum%20glasses.html) debuting at this years Rum Fest.

This would be a fun glass to have. For those of us who can not make it across the pond, I wonder if we could aquire them?

I was just thinking about what the best type of glass is to taste rums. I'm guessing there's no easy answer, though.

Looks very similar to the flare from spirit sippers, but with a much longer stem.

Exactly what I would expect from a sommelier with a penchant for fine rum.

Agreed PDX. Both are modified "thistle" shapes often employed by Malt Whisky fans. I have not tried either of these particular glasses, but Duane's glass does offer a nice stem which I like. I'll be interested to hear any reactions from those who get the chance to sample it at Rum Fest.

I doubt this would be the free glass we get when we pay our entrance fee!! Or will I have to buy a six pack to take back to the Caribbean. Maybe members of the Ministry will get a discount. They do look good though, but fragile. Probably wouldn't last too long in my house, especially when it's the kids time to wash the dishes!!!!

This reminds me of the old joke "How are an orange and an apple the same?" Answer: They're both orange except for the apple.

The Flare is like a thistle except it's exagerratedly different. I tried one and was sorely disappointed. The Flare masks the rum, and when I taste rum, I want to taste it - all of it, good and bad.

On the other hand, this new "perfect rum tasting glass" really is quite similar to the Riedel Malt Whiskey, another horrible glass with not much of a following. Not much real access for olfaction, high and low aromas, etc. I suspect this one too will mask.

And what's with all the engraving on it?

Good idea, let me see what I can do about that? There is a discount for Ministry of Rum members for Sunday's event. Follow the My Favorites link from the menu above this space.

You know the old story, if you want something done right . . .

Thanks for your input on the Flare and thistle shape in general Bill.

I'm curious as to how you came into possession of the Flare.

Thanks Ed. I have some friends coming down to join me on the Saturday, but they think one day of drinking rum will be enough for them. Obviously they don't have our tolerance for the good spirit!! I think I read we will be only drinking 15ml samples. But I will have to be careful aswell, as I fly out the next morning!! I hope the pubs near where I am staying have more than the usual Bacardi, Lamb's and Captain Morgan. Maybe it will be some real ale instead. I'm looking forward to meeting all the members of the "Ministry" for the first time.cheers.gif

I admit to being clueless about the local pubs but I will go out on a limb and say that you won't be disappointed.

Ed, it's great that Ministry of Rum members get a 2 for 1 ticket discount for London's Rum Experience on Sunday, top marks for that! I just tried to sign up for it, but I'm not sure I did it right. We are supposed to input our real names, correct (rather than our MOR usernames)? I'm just worried in case I got it wrong. Thanks!

Rumelier, unfortunately you still won't have much luck finding anything more than the notorious trio of Bacardi, Lamb's and Captain Morgan in the vast majority of London pubs. It's still a pretty grim state of affairs almost everywhere you go here.

However, it's not all doom and gloom because real ale is undergoing a real renaissance right now and there are so many excellent British beers out there that it would take you years to get through them all (even if you were drinking several of them per day). Unfortunately there are still lots of pubs out there serving nothing but generic fizzy nitro-keg beer and I would suggest walking out and trying somewhere else if you accidently stumbled into one of those!

Where are you staying? I might be able to suggest a couple of pubs which could be worth trying out.

I'm staying somewhere in Hampshire with my brother for the first few days then come to the big smoke on Friday before the rumfest. I'm leaving the hotel for my friends to book. This could be a mistake though. They have booked somewhere near the rumfest sight. I think they said about 1km away.
Real Ale is a luxury for me, there is none in the TCI. I was a member of CAMRA before I left the UK, so I'm really looking forward to a few barrels full, mixed with a ploughman's lunch.yay.gif

Hi Gatomalo, put your real name in, that is on your drivers licence etc. and enter the number in the other box. Then it will redirect to another page to print off. Unfotunately nothing came out on the printed page after printing!!
What next??

Hey Rumelier! Thanks for the help. I managed to get it to work! Hope you can get it to work too!

Seems you may have a heavy weekend with all that rum and real ale to drink! May I recommend Deuchars IPA? It's from Edinburgh and is one of the best ales in the UK at the moment (it's a very hoppy golden ale bursting with flavour). It's now widely-available in London, so if you come across it it's well worth giving it a go:

When you find out where you're staying, the following website might prove useful when it comes to pubs. Just type in the area of London where you want to go and a list of local pubs will appear. Each pub is reviewed and rated by the people who visit them. It's a pretty good resource, especially for avoiding the hell-holes!

I'm not sure what went wrong when you tried to print the page. I just printed it, after entering the correct number and my name and the text printed to the right of the Rum Experience logo.

Please try again and let me know if there is a problem.
