I having my first sip of the day and it is Dos Maderas 5 + 3 gold rum that spent its first 5 years in oak barrels (whisky or bourbon) and finished in sherry casks for 3 years. It is a lighter tasting amber rum with the sherry coming right through a background of toffee, with a hint of cinnamon. This not a rum which kicks you in the face with flavor. Also, it's not quite 100% "rum-like". But, that's a good thing because it's different and a good find. Anyone else tried it??????

A few of us were lucky enough to taste Dos Maderas (http://www.ministryofrum.com/forums/../rumdetails.php?r=801) at the 2008 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition in New Orleans in July where it won a Silver Medal.

Dos Maderas is a gorgeous little sipper that is initially a little complicated-- which to me is a wonderful invitation to investigate. i would say by the 3rd nosing, after the second taste, i started involuntarily to 'just enjoy' this rum, and i gave up (for then) trying to figure it out, and just relished its multifariousness, very nice rum.

Williams and Humbert (http://www.globalwinespirits.com/wx/en-WILLIAMS-HUMBERT/PORTAL.INDEX) is the producer of Dos Maderas.

They are a large and well known producer of Sherry and Brandy, so the Sherry cask finish seems a natural for them.

It sounds like an interesting rum. I'm partial to rums aged in smaller sherry casks eg. Bacardi 8 and Doorly's XO. Is this rum widely available?? The combination of Bajan and Guyanese rum given extra time in sherrry casks sounds just too good.

Yup, Rumelier, but think of it as a very tame "interesting"....

Oh, I would definitely say that you'll want to try it. What I was driving at is the fact that it is not a strong, rich, bountiful head-turner. It's an easy sipper, smooth with little burn. It's a rum which you have 3 or 4 glasses of in a sitting while enjoying its subtle layers of flavor. It fits the profile as a sippable gold rum perfectly. It would get lost in a ti punch, for sure! drool.gif

That sounds like a rum I could get used to. I will have to hunt down a bottle. Does Forrest carry it?? Perhaps I could persuade him to start shipping rums back to the Caribbean as he has so many good ones.g()fy

Hi gentlemen,

I've never tasted the Dos Maderas 5 + 3, but I was able to get my hands on their new Dos Maderas PX (see http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-15885-Rum-Examiner~y2009m8d29-Dos-Maderas-PX-aged-rum-from-the-Caribbean)

This rum was the highlight of our last tasting. Now one of my faves. I only heard of availability in France and Spain for now.

Definitely something to try.

Cheers

It was a favorite of many of us in the States as well at the Miami rum fest. in May. If I recall a very unique flavor from the sherry barrels no doubt.
If your heading to the states remember your rummie friends.
Enjoy,
