What a cracking read Rob, well done. I regret my inability to so eloquently express the magic of our my own trip to Jamaica......thanks for doing it for me.

Fantastic read Robert, I really enjoyed the pictures in particular. I recall seeing a depiction of that water source on an old Appleton website. I don't suppose you recorded that zip-line ride on video?

Thank you Forrest but casting spells with the written word is an art sadly denied me. I adore people like Ed, Rob and our good friend Dave Broom for using their skills to spread the good word.

I'm looking forward to doing my bit tomorrow evening when I'm hosting a consumer tasting and cocktail session at the Boutique Bar Show. Anyone free tomorrow at 6 and in London is very welcome to get in touch so I can wangle free tickets

oh and Count, I have a professionally produced video of our competition event in Jamaica which featured on local telly and includes the ziplining. It's really large and on DVD though can you suggest how I as a technologically challenged individual might post it?

Hmm, there is some software that can convert video from dvd into divx which you could then upload to youtube or similar service or a server. I can't recall which software it was that could do this as I haven't done such a thing for a long time but I can get back to you on that on the morrow.

Paul i beg you. . .
Understand this-- the word will lead, dare to try, entice...
but conviction and diaspora are in your hands.

The eloquence of craft, cogently delivered, is the unparalleled convincer; in you hand one drink and a kind word- speaks volumes.

Not to disparage the wordsmiths, but to empower the artisan, is why i say this...

The wonderful points that have been made to me are numerous, but at the forefront of my consciousness they are few-- The marvelous artificers craft of that has been displayed to me are few in comparison, but i remember each one-- with joyous clarity.
Each drink casts a spell, and displaces a curse-- creating an opportunity for understanding-- an opportunity that did not exist before.

Though i have not seen your work-- its legend proceeds you, and anticipation fortifies me, as i i believe.

We need Rob, Ed, Dave, and all the other writers, but we also need you Paul, and BarNowOn, and Beach Bum Berry, and all of your cohorts to show us!

i know i am not the Count but if you go here (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-audio-video-format-conversion-program.htm) they review several high quality format converters that are free. (i use Format Factory, but i don't do DVD conversion so...)

I remember using dvd shrink to rip dvds but I dont remember what I used to convert the dvd files into an .avi file. This tutorial looks ok: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW958i2Tfwk

I also found this tutorial on wikihow, http://www.wikihow.com/Rip-a-DVD-to-an-AVI-or-MPG-File-Using-DVDx

Hope that helps.

Here's a little story about Diplomacy and rum, in Venezuela.

Rum Diplomacy (http://www.giftedrums.com/article/RumDiplomacy.html)

That wraps up the latest edition of the Gifted Rums Guide. It's at the printer and will debut at New York Rum Fest October 20 and RumFest UK October 23.

I love how open and full of information DU are. It's seems to be true that when a company is free with the inside story, the product they produce is often exceptional. You can be proud when you produce the Diplomatico line of rums!

I wasn't aware they produced any product for the Pampero blend. I understood there were 3 distilleries in Venezuela and Pampero came out of Industrias Pampero (which also supplies rum for Oronoco). Do they buy in the heavier pot-still rums fom DU then?

Great looking trip by the way lads. Would love to visit Venezuela some time soon

I believe I heard that DUSA provides something like 80 percent of the rum stock for the Pampero blend, but can't say for sure. Aside from DUSA and Santa Teresa, there is another distillery in Venezuela.

Destilerias Unidas is very open about their methods and philosophy on making fine spirits. I predict that in the near future, they'll be ready to welcome visitors with a new hotel right next to the property. Let's organize a trip sometime next year. It's well worth the time. We can see Angel Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Falls) while we're there and visit the upper Amazon basin.

That's one of the best ideas you may have ever had my good man. I'm already looking forward to coming across to see the Gables and your rum festival next year. Going onto Venezuela would be incredible. Just got to clear a few weeks out the diary.....

Venezuela is a huge country and travel isn't easy. To get from Distilerias Unidas to Angel Falls would require at least a day each way and at least two planes and that's if you're lucky. When I went there last year we flew out of a small airport to Angel Falls then had to fly back to Caracas through Margarita. But I like the idea a lot.
Here's a link to the geography of Angel Falls (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=9.313569484495469,-61.645660400390625&spn=1.118032,1.444702&t=h&z=8) on google maps. The falls are under the clouds in the middle of that page. Distilerias Unidas is outside the town of Miel, which is in the middle of this page (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=miel,+venezuela&sll=9.928271,-69.392395&sspn=0.557996,0.722351&ie=UTF8&ll=9.723777,-69.160995&spn=0.069793,0.090294&t=h&z=5).

The videos i`ve seen in the orchid society here from the Angel falls and the Tepuis are the most amazing iґve seen. Stunning!

Here's a better perspective (http://maps.google.com/staticmap?zoom=5&size=600x600&maptype=mobile%5C&markers=9.7263669968,-69.1646575928,brownd%7C9.291886,-61.583862,bluea%5C&key=ABQIAAAAWYV8uKdYuH8Pn4bywLGQNxQPkvf4bxmGZmYSUw dFAP-0OkcYrhQpaueEeT14AxUGt6zPK0MA9VKfqw) of the distance between the Distilerias Unidas 'D' and Angel Falls 'A'. Considering that you have to fly back to Caracas to get from D to A, it's a lot more than a day trip. And you'll need more than a day at Angel Falls.

Angel Falls is so close to Guyana... let's go there too!

Berbician

It's actually very difficult to cross from Venezuela into Guyana. Most of Guyana's transport links are with the Anglophone Caribbean, although there is now a road all the way to Lethem on the border with Brazil.

If any of you do go to Guyana, be sure to visit Kaieteur Falls. This is the highest single-drop waterfall in the world and makes Angel Falls look like a dripping tap.

Kaieteur Falls (http://www.world-waterfalls.com/database.php?s=N&t=H&orderby=height&sortLimit=300) has a drop of over 700 feet while Angel Falls (http://www.world-waterfalls.com/database.php?s=N&t=H&orderby=height&sortLimit=300) drops more than 2600 feet, a little less than one kilometer, making it the highest clear drop water fall in the world. One of the incredible things about Angel Falls is that it isn't fed by mountain rivers but rather rain collected from the top of the plateau that rises above the surrounding jungle. It's proximity to the equator ensures that moisture laden air condenses as it rises over the plateau dropping its burden as it cools. During some times of the year Angel Falls isn't as robust as other times, but it is very impressive.
