I've been to a lot of different bars lately, and I'm never surprised at the lack of rum options. It seems like most bars just have Bacardi Superior and Myers's Dark with some flavored ones strewn about. I've been on the lookout for bars/restaurants with more of an appreciation for rums, so I'll try and update this list as I find more. I think I'm one of only two people in the Portland area, at least that are on the member map.

Carlyle restaurant is in Northwest Portland. It's in an odd location off by itself among warehouses, but you can imagine the rest of the Pearl District will have spread there in short time. They had a few fine rums to pick from, and the bartender seemed to be into them instead of just having them there for novelty. Unfortunately I only recall two of the three rums I sampled there. It was my first time having both Cockspur 12 and Cruzan Single Barrel (I don't recall the third), and the Cruzan was definitely the pick of the litter so to speak.

PS (and off topic): I found out about the restaurant in an interesting way. I had bought a bottle of higher-end gin for someone as a birthday gift to make gin and tonics with. I was thinking that if you're going to buy a fine gin to make this cocktail with, why waste it on a high fructose corn syrup concoction like Schweppes? Isn't there something better out there? A simple google search for "quality tonic water" led me to find Q Tonic, sweetened with organic agave and with hand-picked quinine from the Peruvian Andes. This led me to check where I could get this in my area, and I found the restaurant. I had their "The GQ" using Junipero gin and the Q tonic water, and it was excellent. This stuff is available in many states, so this isn't just for Portland people. I'm on a similar quest to find a fine alternative to Coke/Pepsi for use with rum right now (I may have to search and/or post about this).

A very long-winded post I know, especially for only my 2nd one as a member, but I hope it was informative and didn't sound like I was advertising or rambling on.

Thanks for adding your location to your profile. It's nice to see who's around the world.

I'll admit to having added a few things to their collection, but Daniel and the others at Teardrop Lounge in the Pearl know a fair thing or two about the spirit.

I was able to try a sample of the Charbay green label there, and if you ask real nice you can get a shot of the One Barrel they get on occasion from a couple of regulars.

Daniel is also really into the Agricoles, and will get his hands on any he can. Last I recall seeing there is the St. James Amber, which is being carried at Pearl Specialty.

Guess I'll slap my dot on that map too!

Thanks for the info! I've lived in Portland for the majority of the year since late 2005, but I've just recently turned 21, so my experience with the city in this context is relatively small. I'm not surprised there's some more chic locations (especially in the Pearl) that will have more exotic rum options than the average watering hole. I've heard that Portland is actually a city with a lot of what some call "mixologists" in it.

It's nice to know about yet another member from the Portland area. I lost the old issue I had, but Portland Montly magazine had an issue with their picks for some of the best bars in the city including a recommended cocktail to try at each one. I found it online, but haven't reviewed it yet.

New to forum, but old to Portland.

I love Teardrop and would like to spend more time and money there.

I tried to slap a dot on the map, but technology outsmarted me.

Any opinions on Thatch? I haven't made it there yet.

Welcome to the forums. Sorry you had a problem putting Teardrop on the map. You have to register the bar/restaurant before you can add a marker to the maps, to help me control the credibility of the information on this site.

We've only been once, but I will most likely never go back. Terrible, watered down drinks, seriously overpriced, and bartenders have no knowledge of whats on the shelf other than the gins.

I'll have to come by for the final Tiki Tuesday that I just read about. I'll probably make it to Teardrop once or twice before that, but I look forward to coming by to see what it's all about. party2.gif

What is a good time to show up?

I seem to remember El Gaucho in Portland having an ok rum selection. Of course, their offerings are a bit more expensive than other places, but it may be worth to check out their bar during happy hour times.

I've been told the Greg at Andina in the Pearl is a rum fiend and typically has a variety of nice ones. But I haven't been to check this for myself.

There is also Salvador Molly's west (Sun Stop Cafe?) bar 'the Monsoon Room' which should still have a largish selection of rums.
