I've personally only tasted one or two. My bar is about to get our first one (Pitu). Any thoughts on favorite brands? Also, is there a restricition on age for these cachacas?
I personally got to try the GRM and it was so tasty! Id love to find a bottle of this somewhere.

Yeah, GRM is very nice - but expensive. I've also had the Roichinha (sp?) and it's pretty good - if I'd never had the GRM I might have been happier with it.
Fazenda Mae De Ouro was supposed to introduce a 5-year-old about 6+ months ago. I have not heard of it's availability. I love the white - fantastic stuff - so I have high hopes if the 5-year-old ever gets to the US.
Ypioca has some aged ones, and they have a very good reputation. Didn't you try any at last year's Rum Fest? I somehow managed to miss the table...
Pitu is crap.

Ypioca would be great as a well--same price as Pitu, and it doesn't taste like gas!
You should totally be able to get Fazenda MГE de OURO, and Leblon which would both be nice manageable step ups (or the aged Ypiocas, or Toucano...)
Fazenda MГE de OURO is distibuted by Mystique Brands (http://www.mystiquebrands.com/)(click on the names) and Leblon can be contacted here (http://www.liveloveleblon.com/contact/) (5 names down-- you may recognize him from the Ministry Forum!)
The Ypioca, and Toucano are imported by Preiss Imports (the same people who do X'Tabentun) and distributors in your area are listed here (http://www.preissimports.com/distributorresults.aspx?PA)(i think it is the 5th one down again.)

GRM, Armazem Vieira, Rochinha, are all aged-artisnal-premium-cachacas THAT ARE WONDERFUL!! They are imported by the people who import Beleza Pura (also very good)- EXCALIBUR Enterprise and they dont seem to have distribution in Pa, but here (http://www.belezapura.com/where-to-find) are listed places to get it (i would also add Hi-Time (http://www.hitimewine.net) to the list i think we may ship to Philly, i am not sure it changes all the time).

I dont recall them having aged cachacas at their table. I did have the strawberry ginger caipirinha, which was great!
Ive got their white cachaca. That and Vellho Barreiro are the two low end cachacas we carry. They are both hands down better than 51 and Pitu. I was hoping, though, that their gold offering was a little more well-rounded.

Forrest, thanks for the help! I never knew Leblon had a gold offering, Ill look into that. Capital Wine & Spirits (a part of Charmer SUnbelt) distributes that out here.
Id love to order from your site, but if I get caught with a product on my shelves, the fines are hefty... Thanks for the insight and direction, now to send some emails!
Preiss Imports has an amazing portfolio! Im currently working with my rep at Laird to get me an order from them. Theyve also got English Harbor and Cadenhead to go with the D'Aristi and Ypioca.
I have spoken with Olie Berlic regarding Beleza Pura (which has since disappeared from PA) perhaps Ill contact him to get his others in here!

i'm sorry i didn't really see the "Best Gold Cachaca" thread title and i spoke out of turn. As far as i am aware there is no Leblon Gold. There is a 'rumor' of a Fazenda Mae De Ouro aged offering, but like Scottes said, i have only heard and not seen.
Preiss Imports is amazing, and yes there are aged Ypioca's-as well as Tuocano, i heard that there is a new aged Pitu (which you must have been speaking of, and i have never had...), by the way if you are in contact with Olie, you don't need no help from me-- he is AWESOME!!, and tell him hello...--f

Pitu was the first one I tried. If it wasn't for reading other reviews of different Cachacas I am sure I would never have tried another. To me this is not a "first" Cachaca that I would want people to try but rather use it to show the difference in quality with some of the others out there. I particularly like the Yipocca.

So I got the Pitu Gold yesterday, and its actually quite pleasant. Its on the sweeter side, which I find a nice distraction from the general roughness of unaged cachacas. It says on the bottle that its meant to be drank in a snifter, and you know what... they could be right.
I have a feeling that some of the color has been added based on the sweetness, as it does not say how long its aged, just that it has been aged.

I haven't tried that many gold Cachaзas but of the ones I've tried, Ypioca was pretty good. They make two golds.
152
Ypioca Gold, which is aged in balsam for one year.
151
and to add to the confusion, Ypioca Ouro (which means gold), which is aged for two years in balsam
BTW, I would be happy to drive down from Bucks County to help you choose the appropriate spirit Btmup.gif

Well that is good to find out. The regular Pitu only finds redemption in a drink with very strong flavors-- see what a little age can do....

The 160 is a marvelous sipper, but doesn't taste like an aged cachaca. Really it doesn't taste like anything else, but I am reminded of a malted milkshake.

i am certain you are correct sir!
They are allowed to add up to six grams of sugar per liter- sounds sweet.

To put it in perspective 6 grams is about one heaping teaspoon of sugar.

I almost got a bottle of Ypioca 160 last year via a silent auction... hah

I really like the Nega Fulo Special Aged Reserve (43%), which is distilled twice in copper pot-stills and aged for 3 years in european oak barrels. It gives you a really smooth caipirinha but if u want to cearly pick out the typical cachaca sugar cane aromas u might want to go to the usual Nega Fulo, which is not aged at all.
Another aged golden Cachaca comes from Velho Barreiro Reserva Especial aged for 10 years (39%). Due to its lower strenght it's smooth, well balanced but also might be not as flavourful as you would expect from a 10years old. It's fruity light und has just an underlying oak note. I wouldn't suggest to mix it, because the flavour would get lost in a cocktail.
I also tried the Pitu Oro, but it definately can't compete with Nega Fulo or Velho Barreiro at all.
Pitu is the most distributed and bought cachaca here in germany and the most people don't even know that this is a cachaca, they just think the spirit is called Pitu. For a mixer it's okayish but if u want to enjoy cachaca neat i wouldn't go for it.
Looking forward to try Ypioca.

I discovered Leblon a couple of months ago and could not stop drinking it or sharing it with friends. Aged in cognac barrels, it is clearly one of the finest cachacas to be found in the world today and sure to be the gold standard for that unique Brazilian Sugar Cane Spirit. For those mixologists, I created a new cocktail with Leblon during my vacation on Martha's Vineyard called "The Chilmark" : 2 shots of Leblon, 2 muddled limes, tablespoon of fine raw sugar,
one cup of Turkey Hill Mojito Green Tea. Shake with good ice. Pour into two chilled martini glasses finish by gently dropping in a Wild Hibiscus Flower in Syrup. Done right it's a beautifully layered drink that tastes fantastic!
