I put this out on my blog but thought I should add it here as well.

It is entirely possible this drink is served under a different name but I came up with it independent of a recipe and it is one I drink quite often. I call it the Gulf Coast Sunset

1 oz Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

1.5 Oz. Cockspur 12 Rum

8 oz. Ginger Beer

Garnish:

2 orange wheels, halved

Optional:

1/4 oz simple syrup (when your ginger beer has too much bite to it. i.e. Jamaican Ginger beer or the oranges aren’t as sweet as you want)

I generally take 1 whole ripe orange and cut 2 wheels out of the center of the orange and slice these into 2 halves each, and drop in the bottom of the glass. I then squeeze the rest of the orange which usually gives about 1 oz. of juice.

I pour this into a pint glass, and add the Cockspur Rum. Fill the glass halfway up with crushed ice. Pour in the Ginger Beer. Have a seat outside, drink and relax. I find this drink very refreshing in the summer heat here in Florida.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is quite the thirst quencher in the summer heat.

This sounds like a great one! I love rum and ginger so this twist on it sounds great. What ginger beer do you prefer?

Barritts or Bundaberg, but i can only get bundaberg locally at World Market. The only other locally available ginger beers is DG Jamaican and it is quite spicy, and a little strong for this drink. Thats why I suggest a little simple syrup in that case. I love the way Orange and Ginger go together and the cockspur really seems to go well with that pairing. Let me know how you like it.

Thanks for the Gulf Coast Sunset. It sounds interesting.

BTW DG Jamaican is quite strong, but has a good ginger flavor. The version we've seen contains HFCS, however, (as does most of the Barrits in this country), so Bundaberg has been our recourse for a good Dark 'n Stormy.

Wow, now that's a good drink! I'm going to make another. I'm using the Barritts since that's all I've seen. Where do you get the Bundy, Michael?

We get it at bevmo rumdog007. It is sweeter than we would prefer, but has the best flavor and sugar as sweetener.

rumdog007.... its at Hi-Time!!! You know that place.

i wish we could get the Bundy lemon and bitter... yum.

And while we are talking about Barrits, they have that ginger and pineapple so good!!! (think Goslings 151....)

Also you should check out Buderim Ginger Brew (Aussie Style=spicier, yank style is milder) not as recherche as Bundy, but it holds up in a mix better.
