View Full Version : Madras
Hi everyone,
I would like to have information on a rum that is available here in Quebec. The complete description is Madras rhum vieux ambrй (translation: Madras old amber rum). It is produced by Liquoristerie Madras SA, from Guadeloupe (web: http://www.madras-rum.com/mainpage.html) and is on sale at 49.75$.
I looked for info on this rum here but could not find anything. Anyone tried it before? Is it a good purchase at this price? Any comparable?
Thanks in advance,
Ben

We are expecting this rum to be imported any day now into South Florida. My initial impression from the Madras rums of Guadeloupe: they are exceptionally rich, sweet and strong. Some of their rums are very old, such as the 12 year and the 24 year old Darboussier labels. The price is not cheap, but these rums always cost a bit more than others that are produced in larger quantities and available widely.
Thank you Mr. Burr,
Since I was not able to find this rum listed on the big US sites (BevMo, Astor, Binnys, HiTyme, etc.) I guess I will take a chance with it. I just hate it when I buy a rum here at 50$ and see it across the border at 15$.
I will give my impressions after trying it. I still have a Plantation Trinidad and a Cockspur Bajan in line before it though.

I'm reviving a thread from an old age here, but I finally opened the bottle of Madras I got for Christmas two years ago. I waited so long actually that this rum is not even sold in Quebec anymore.
Anyway this agricole rum is not for the faint of heart. It is actually at 50%, stronger than other agricoles I've seen. The scent and taste of alcohol is therefore more present, but the usual smoky taste of agricoles last longer. It is good as a sipper, but I found it better with natural ginger ale. That mix was very good, better than a regular rum.

In the French islands, white rum is bottled at at least 50% abv. There are a few companies bottling product at less alcohol for export markets but these are shunned in the islands. I expected to see Madras rums coming to the US, but they haven't arrived yet as it seems the company has lost interest or had some regulatory problems. If it was easy everyone would be importing rum and every other spirit from abroad.
