Hope this was not covered somewhere, tried to do a search and came up with nothing. I came across this a few months back, and just now getting to research it more. Ramu rum is produced from sugar cane grown on the Ramu river of Papua New Guinea. Thought i read, but now can not find the same article, that is is the only rum of its kind from the region. It is not exported, made infrequently, and is generally a gift to dignitaries and special guests to the country. I think, if i recall correctly, that it can be purchased if there is avaliable bottles, but it is not exported or commercially available otherwise.
I was wondering if anyone tried it, has more info on it, pictures and such. I am a fan of all things PNG and would love to get more info.
Once again, apologized if this was covered, and if so, can someone point me to the thread. I will also search again and try to find the article, and link to it.
Thanks
found this one line of info on a PNg news update from 05
Rum made from Ramu sugar was recently given to attendees of the Pacific Island Forum after their visit to Madang. It is unlikely that the people of PNG will see Ramu Rum for at least another four to five years. Ramu Sugar presently sells alcohol to distillers in PNG, Fairdeal Liquors and Trade Winds as well as exporting to Australia. Ramu is currently diversifying and has planted over 4,000 hectares of Oil Palm. They also produce beef with a current herd of 16,000 animals. This is on top of the 10,000 tonnes of sugar exported annually to the Pacific and USA.
