Which rhum?

I'd like to make some Hemingway Daiquris and was wondering which rhum agricole to buy. I've read that a lot of you here recommend La Favorite white, but my local liquor store just has Depaz Blue Cane (which is more expense, but higher quality). What would you all recommend? Should I still look for the La Favorite or is the Depaz just as good (or better)?

Also, can I just just cherry liqueur or is there actually a maraschino liqueur that's sold? (i couldn't find it)

Welcome to the forums. Depaz is more expensive but I'd recommend a white rhum agricole. La Favorite and Neisson aren't sold in Maryland yet, so you'll have to go to NY, Connecticut or buy it online.

It's a little making a good margarita with reposada tequila, you can do it but if you're looking for the flavor you'll want to use the white spirit. La Favorite and Neisson are 100 proof and the Depaz is 90 proof.

You may appreciate the bite of a 100 proof in a Hemingway. Luxardo Brand makes a quite nice Maraschino which according to the brethren may avail itself well.

As it was mentioned a few times on this forum before, and I can attest to it now that I've puchased Luxardo Maraschino and have made some drinks with it. Heed this: "A little goes a long way."

Not meaning it will knock you loopy if you use too much, but rather, it can "kill" the taste of a drink if you use too much of it. Just a bit will do.

Joining the choir..Luxardo is good but too much is not.
But the right amount can make some wonders to a drink in my opinion. cheers.gif

I would also recommend a white spirit for the Hemingway. Purchase a bottle of Neisson online, you won't be sorry. And, I agree with my friends about the Luxardo, just a little.

While i love making daiquiris with Neisson, or La Favorite (or a myriad of others-- frankly it is one of my favorite drinks), i would start at a more 'Cuban' style (Matusalem Platino is good..) for research purposes.
Here is a previously posted recipe taken from Eric Felton's article in the Wall Street Journal:

Yesterday I was getting caught up on newspaper reading when I came across an article on the Hemingway Daiquiri. If anyone is interested it is the Food & Drink section of Wall Street Journal, 5/24,25.

The Papa Doble

2 oz white rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
1/4 oz maraschino liqueur
1 1/2 to 2 C shaved ice

Combine in blender and serve.

I've almost completely relegated Luxardo to brown spirits, and use Stock for white spirits. Luxardo is a great product, but I just think it's too powerful for things like white rums, gin, etc.
