Hi Joy,

Beside the obvious "30 years", how long did it take to develop the blend for the new 30 year old offering and what was the motivation for its creation?

Great question Dood!

Joy, I read that you joined Wray&Nephew in 1981 and became the master blender in 1997. That assumes the rums that were to become the blend of the limited edition rum had already been put to barrels before you joined Wray&Nephew. How were you first introduced to these rums and how much were you involved with these rums before you became the master blender? Was it always planned that these rums would be saved for this limited edition?

Furthermore I would like to know why only 1440 bottles are released. Do you have any of these rums left for future limited edition blends or has the angels share been such a big factor over the 30 years it is not possible to bottle more or perhaps there was little of these rums to begin with?

- Best regards

Appleton Estate 30 Year Old Jamaica Rum is a limited edition which means that there will only be one production run of this particular rum.

We are only producing 1440 bottles because that is the amount of liquid that we have ... you lose a lot to the angels when the rum sits in a barrel for 30 years.

Where can you find the 30?

Joy, I would love to get a hold of a bottle or two of the 30 year to sell at the bar, if the proper distribution routes could be reached.

Me having one bottle means 13 people getting to enjoy the rum.

Hopefully I am not getting my hopes up, but I went to the liquor store on base tonight, and the manager mentioned to me that she might be able to get one of the 30 year bottles.....and if that is true, some of you may need to make a trip to NC when I retire from the Marine Corps in March 2010.

CROSSING MY FINGERS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I second that, it's starting to bug the crap out me that I haven't heard any more info since the original press release of over a year ago... I only just broke down and decided a couple of weeks back to ask my local liquor and wine merchant who meant to be asking the importers here about it and he's pretty good, but nothing back as yet, that's if he's remembered to chase it...

If so that's a hell of premature press release they put out last year. Would be self-defeating to have done so that early.

Sorry for the non-response Rumelier - I don't check this section of the board as often as I should I guess. To answer your question - yes, it was this year...but that information was as of last April. This is the exact message I received:

Still no final word. However, rumor has it that we will be bottling in May which means availability in US late summer – August/September.

I sent another email to see if there is any update....stay tuned.

OK - I just heard back and here's an update hot of the press this morning from the NYC rep for Appleton:

Hello Joe,

Yes, the 30 year old is still on schedule for release in July/August. My current estimate is ship mid-July and available in stores in August.

Stay tuned.

Actually, wait a minute...I'm not sure why I'm sharing this info with you all....

I finally got some 30 Y.O. info via my liquor store friend. He spoke to the local distributors last week. It seems we will be getting a very minuscule allocation. Probably a handful will go to top flight venues, a couple for distributor tasting purposes, and possible 2 unallocated bottles. We may in fact it seems be better off inquiring through the NZ distributor as it seems they are the master distributor for the region and likely to get a better allocation than Oz does. Ironically, it seems the distributor wasn't even aware of the 30th and asked my friend how I knew about it. It's scary when the customer knows more than the local distributor!

Sure hope some makes it up north of the border, does anybody know why there was the delay at it was due to come out last year, I don't recall Joy commenting on this?

I am reliably informed the delay in the 30 year old is a bottling issue. Turns out the closure didn't fit the bottle properly and the whole thing had to be tweaked.

Should be out by the end of the year. Don't know if that means it'll be a 31 year old now ;)

Paul if it's now 31 years old does that make it worth moreg()fy
It's out, but I guess to very little fanfare. I think I'm going to open it tonite.
Surprised each bottle wasn't numbered, just a little certificate in an envelope with a wax seal. Hopefully the rum will make up for this lack of individuality.

The last thing I heard about the local availability down here was that the few bottles available to the general public were possibly going to be put to 'tender'. That to me sounds entirely ridiculous, they could be pushed up well beyond what OS prices are buy either unscrupulous distributors or over enthusiasm. It's really sounding to me like I might as well forget about the local 'handful' allocation and focus on obtaining a bottle elsewhere...

Oz, if we get the promised amount, I will post here and I hope I can sell it to some real rum lovers and not just people buying it for the collectors value.

Thanks Rumelier, that would be great outcome. I'm not relishing the idea of having to jump through hoops to obtain it otherwise. Fingers crossed. glass.gif

Knowing what the Australian taxes are I'd try to get it sent to you as a "gift" from some other country. Which city are you located in by the way?

Having imported quite a few bottles over the last few years, I've found the taxes quite reasonable really, especially compared to the importer markups on a lot of products. The other important factor with our duties is, if an item comes here via the postal system, ie anything including via EMS service, then the duty limit is $A1000.

I'm based just south of Sydney.

Oh, yes! I know where one bottle went. AND, it is everything it should be. I just wrote The Rumelier to say that the barrel/wood is upfront in this rum. I have never tasted a rum where there was so much of the barrel which is so well matched to the essence of the rum. I've had rums which were ruined by the barrel with too much aging. Not this one! In fact, the character of this 30YO is so well established, it needs the barrel/wood to rein it in and add depth.

This rum is worth every penny. Can one buy, say, 15 bottles of something else which would make one happy? Sure! But, it wouldn't taste like this wonderful creation. It is truly unique.

Thanks again, Forrest! glass.gif

Rumdog 007, it is indeed a unique rum and as you say the taste of the rum makes the price tag easier to swallow. The biggest problem is not trying to reach for a glass every night, as it would be so easy to sit down and demolish half a bottle in no time!!!glass.gif
