I heard of a new rum coming soon from Venezuela named Castro with a big red star on the label. It's going to be controversial in Miami.

Robert Adams of Nashville, Tennessee is apparently working to import the product.

Adams must have cajones bigger than Chavez if he thinks he is going to float that brand in Miami.

Does he have "Mao" beer and a "Khrushchev" vodka in the works too?

From tastings.com

Exceptional

Copper color. Coffee candy, dark chocolate, dried pineapple and peppery spice aromas follow through on a soft, silky entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with accents of oily nuts, wet stones, and oak. Finishes with a vibrant dry-yet fruity fade of dried tropical fruits and cherries, toffee, and tobacco. A nice flavor ride that will make to carefree sipping or serious mixing. (tasted on Jun-18-2008) rum.

Castro Rum form Venezuela did well in the recent Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition in New Orleans. It's a dark (black), opaque bottle with a red star and red type running from top to bottom.

I'm pretty sure Mao drank baijiu or some form of huagjiu (similar to sake), not beer.

I've got a bottle of rum called Ron Comandante Fidel, which is made in Spain in homage to the (ex) Cuban leader. On the front is a picture of the man himself - I'll have to remember to take a photo and post it here.

wet stones

OK... I gotta ask... what the hell does "wet stones" taste like. Taste notes of wet stones, hints of leather (what, like the inside of Catwoman's mask)?

I don't know what Michelle Pfeiffer would think of that!

Seriously... these guys at Tastings.com put so many flavor notes in some of their drink reviews, I'm starting to wonder if they just have a big wheel, like on wheel of fortune and they spin it, and throw in what comes up.

I've stood in a creek ankle deep on several occasions - I've not once been tempted to bend down, dip my hand in the water and pull up a stone to pop into my mouth.

Wet stones would certainly be open for some interpretation. My guess is that they are referring to the mouthfeel, but then again, different stones are going to have different mouthfeels according to their texture so my guess is going to be as good as yours.

Do you know who produces this rum? I tried to find their website but with little luck.

This Barcelona based web retailer (http://www.spiritscorner.com/scriptsing/buscar.asp?K=Detalle&IdProducto=11490) lists this rum as a three year old white from Cuba.

The Importer/Wholesaler listed is located in the Northwest Basque area. This may account for a local cult following amongst the well known separatists in that area of Spain. The importer does not seem to maintain a website.

Does not look white though that could be due the background of this image:

Perhaps Gatomalo will tell us if it is any good and if it is not I want to buy this bottle to my collection anyway, just because it amuses me.

Getting back to the Castro rum conversation I love the 2007 gift set they have on their website. (http://roncastro.com.ve/estuche.htm) Rum, glasses, cigars, matches (or chocolate?). It is perfect!

Apparently they can make more of those gift packs if theres demand. Just found out. And the golden things in the box are chocolate.

Hey, Count Silvio! The information on the bottle is not particularly helpful. The rear label says it is "made for Abanescu", a company in La Jonquera, Spain". I'm always wary of rums and wines which claim to be "made for" somebody rather than "made by", as it can often indicate a lack of quality.

You're right, it's not a white rum - it's an añejo, so as you would expect it's a golden/rum, or a ron dorado as they say in Spain.

Its alcohol volume is 37.5%, and the rear label talks of it being produced using the best honey and sugar cane. I haven't opened it yet, but the description on the label leads me to believe it might be a bit like Ron Legendario.

As soon as I've tried it I'll post my impressions here, but I should say that it only cost me about 7.50 Euros, so I'm not expecting too much.
