Yesterday at my local liquor store, I came across a bottle of white rum that is made locally here in Madison (yaharabay.com). They also make Vodka, which a friend of mine loves, and gin. So I decided to buy a bottle, $26, and see if it's any good.
Anything to look for while testing a white rum? I normally drink dark. Any good mixes to try?

Please tell me what store (and address) if there is more than one outlet you found this at... I will be in Madison mid-next week!
While I am there, I stock up on Fat Squirrel beer, and bring several 6-packs home for requesting neighbors!
Added - I just checked out the website. Not so sure about the rum... his area of expertise is vodka. I wouldn't mind a free taste of the rum if it's available for that, the Lemoncella looks interesting!
-KVH64... that's not Ham Radio there, is it?

First, I look for a good experience when I taste any rum. Is there anything objectionable in the aroma, taste for finish. Beyond that, I look for the fullness of the body and whether or not the body follows the aroma and the finish follows the body.
For me, the quality of a molasses-based white rum is apparent in the finish, if it has a sharp finish it looses points in my book.My next test is a daiquiri, one of my favorite white rum drinks.

If you still want to try the rum, I bought it at Woodmans East. I'm hoping if it's anything like the Vodka, the rum won't be too bad ;).
No Ham Radio, just a nick-name I got from playing basketball and my height added to it. (Keith Van Horn + 6'4")

Well, the real Keith Van Horn has a handful of inches on ya! Anyway, since he was instrumental in getting Jason Kidd back to the Mavs, I think I like you!
Woodmans... I'll take a look next week. I've shot $26 on worse things!
Ended up bringing a bottle of Cruzan Coconut and a bottle of VooDoo Spiced Rum to a party - left the Don Q at home. The wife killed the bottle of Cruzan (she will be ugly in the morning)!!!

I did break open the bottle last night..... Had a sip or two on the rocks, I think it's pretty good, although I have nothing to compare it to. To me, what I call the "burn", wasn't too bad. I most definitely had worse... cough...Jameson... cough.
Then mixed in some pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. Only ingredients I had at the time. (Normally used with flavored rum.)

Being originally from (near) Madison, my first reaction was, what? Someone is making rum in Madison?
Anyway, I believe this is where the Death's Door Gin/Vodka is made.
They must be branching out to other products to keep their still busy.

Hopefully that made you better looking and you got lucky.

Unfortunately, it takes more than the better part of a bottle of coconut rum to make me look better!
And there is a tipping point on the "lucky scale" and the amount of rum consumed went beyond the tipping point!

So you are saying the toilet bowl got most of the "action" that night? ;)

Not quite that bad, but she wasn't happy when I told her how much coke I used when I had her go through almost that whole bottle of rum.
I said, "One and a half bottles." (20 ounce bottles). And she almost offed the whole bottle of rum!
Hey - she never complained about the taste of her drinks, so I kept making them the way I started from the get go!

I have a handful of customers in and near Madison. Madison, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Deerfield, Reedsburg.
Wireless work (cell sites). I'm actually camped out in Pewaukee tonight.
