There's a lot of history, artistry and rarity in a bottle of Appleton Master Blender's Legacy rum. Here is a tribute to three generations of master blenders at the Appleton Estate, created using their rarest aged rums, at the heart of which is the most exquisite 30 year old rum.

These rums were personally selected and blended by master blender Joy Spence, infused with the wisdom of her mentor and predecessor, Owen Tullock and assisted by her protege David Morrison. The symbols of their respective initials adorn the gold-stamped booklet that accompanies the product.

Not yet available in the Unites States, I paid $42 for a bottle in Provideniales, Turks and Caicos Islands recently and believe that to be akin to stealing, without the guilt.

This rum exhibits a rich copper amber color, delicate legs and an exquisite viscosity. The nose is instantly pleasing, featuring sweet molasses, charred oak and a hint of citrus. The initial flavor reveals honey, molasses, vanilla and spice. The rich tones of aged oak are ever present but do not dominate this well balanced blend. The finish is super-smooth, warm and long.

I can't imagine a more satisfying blend of rums for the price I paid.

I am preparing to visit the Appleton Distillery early next month and hope to also report back, as a few of our esteemed colleagues have recently, on the rare 30+ year old product soon to be available in very limited quantities.

I'm getting Legacy for 86 canadian dollars in about 2 weeks. Now I need to begin plans how to acquire a bottle of 30 without bankrupting.

To be entirely frank....as good as it is...you needn't bother. We should have some available to taste at the rumfest, and there are probably better ways to spend your money. Unless you're thinking like an avid collector rather than consumer.

It's amazing but very pricey because of the rarity of 30 and up to 35 year old rum.....

The Master Blender's Legacy is very good and not over priced. Old rum is expensive, it cost money to make it, then it was warehoused (in a barrel that costs money to buy and maintain), in a warehouse (that cost money to build and maintain), that was insured for many years and all the while, the angels have been taking their share.

At the end of 15, 20 or 30 years, the costs and losses are well beyond the market price of the rum. Then add the cost of bottling, distribution and marketing, not to mention taxes and it's amazing that any mortal can begin to afford anything that is as good as the aged we enjoy every day.

True true.....I've often wondered how they afford to sell rum at some of the prices charged.

Rum is definitely the upcoming spirit du jour. Just wait til the marketeers start thinking like cognac houses, and we see the 'super-premium' terms and subsequent price explosion.

Robert, I think we need to put the price of our rums up at the airport duty free store!! But seriously, it is a great rum for the price, as you said the heart of the rum is a 30 year rum. I pay US$ 31, about a dollar for each year of ageing. Because of it's very reasonable price and great taste it has become one of my most regular drinks. Thanks Joy.
