Lemon Hart Dark Rum, Jamaica

In my copious visits to liquor stores these days, I came across two old bottles of Lemon Hart Dark Jamaican Rum -- so old they have no UPC code. The label is quite old and tattered. The old liquor tax stamp that was glued across the top has disintegrated.

Does anyone else have a similar bottle?

Did you inquire as to how long this bottle had been sitting around?

How common (or rare) is it to find old, discontinued, or simply hard to find rums that mysteriously make their ways onto shelves, often put there by people who don't know the value of them?

Sometimes, its just a matter of timing. About a year ago, I was looking for a bottle of Pyrat XO, (not rare, old, or hard to find). On a whim, I stopped in this little, out of the way shop. They had one bottle of the Pyrat left that they were trying to get rid of. I left with it for $13.......(they made sure I was aware that it was a deal).

This little store had recently changed owners and the new owners had no clue about rum. The shelves were stocked with unusual products, which are slow to sell. I believe the old owner cleaned out the back room and put all the stuff he could not sell on the shelves to increase his inventory. The new folks could not answer any questions about any of the rum. I taught them a thing or two about the brands they had and they were thankful.

This bottle of Lemon Hart is very old, possibly from the late 1960s.

Wow! That is certainly a find!!! I do enjoy going into the greater Chicago metro area and walking in and out of the many many Liquor Stores up there; many of which don't really seem to have a name (unless identified on a credit card receipt) - they just say "Liquors".

It's a real treat going into these places because you never know what to expect - the big chain stores often seem to give you what you expect, and are probably more "aware" of what they are putting on their shelves, and are frequented often enough by savvy purchasers that anything rare, old, mis-marked gets snatched up quick.

I walked in one little hole in the wall store and there was pretty much the whole Ocumare lineup sitting on one of the middle to lower shelves, pretty dusty bottles I might add.

I asked the guy if he regularly carried these rums and he just looked aloof and shrugged.

It's rather odd that such old bottles would show up on shelves recently. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. The rum is probably not as good now as it once was.

I stopped into the very same liquor store in Rockford, IL that stockdoct is referring to, just this past Thursday. Indeed, what they have on the shelf looks very much the same as the one in your picture, Robert.

There were several bottles still there.

Is there any way of confirming the date of the label design? Maybe call the distiller or distributor?

The rum is probably not as good now as it once was.

:confused: Why would that be? I would think that there would be little deterioration.
