I've written on this forum in the past about one of my favorite rums - Cubaney 12 with it's rich flavor and super-smooth finish. I don't find it at many liquor stores. Recently I drove from Miami to Key West, stopping at 34 liquor stores along the way to distribute my Gifted Rums Guide. The Florida Keys are a string of many dozens of islands connected by bridges for more than 100 miles. Rum is king in these parts -- mostly cheap and plentiful -- but it's surprising how many little stores have great rum selections.
In Key Largo at Denny Liquors, I was impressed with the selection. I had every rum on their shelves in my collection (except a few Bacardis), but discovered a rare find -- Cubaney 15, produced by Oliver and Oliver in the Dominican Republic.
These Cuban exiles produce a truly unique range of rums, of which the 15 is stunning. Deep amber color with a viscosity that produces fine, delicate legs on a tasting glass. The aroma is sweet, spicy and reminds me of a rich caramel desert. The taste suggests casks of sherry, hints of allspice or cinnamon with a long, warm, lovely finish.
Somewhere out there is a vintage 1981 Ron Tesoro 25 Year Old XO by Cubaney, but I have yet to find it. Any ideas?
