Jungle Juice... not as bad as you remember

So my friends had a housewarming/bbq last weekend, and part of my contribution, aside from the two kegs of micro brew and the jockey box... was a few gallons of our Sgt Classick Silver Rum.

it was sort fun to see it sitting there in a glass carboy, but daunting as well.. what to do what to do.. .would have been a heck of a lot of Mojitos, haha, but we didnt feel like the effort.

So, we made jungle juice.... and it actually tasted quite good. People enjoyed it throughout the day ( and were able keep standing)

The mix

- about 4 liters of white rum
- 2 bottles of cheap vodka ( no need to use the good stuff for a punch, we used popov)
- 2 cans of pineapple juice
- half a jug of Tampico Red ( This is imperative... the sugar content of this mixer pretty much masks the alcohol in the punch, *insert evil laugh here*
- half a jug of Minute Maid Fruit punch
- 1 or 2 cartons of fresh rasberries
- 5 or 6 sprigs of mint, whole
- 2 or 3 sweet oranges, thinly sliced in semi-circles, rind on


Normally, jungle juice is some retched concoction made up by fratboys who just want to put as much cheap booze into a drink as will get everyone drunk, and possibly laid, but for large parties... making a punch is a great idea, as well as fun and refreshing.. AND it provides a nice alternative to beer and wine on a warm summer afternoon.

Brings back memories to 1985 when I was that young frat boy, and I was saddled with the task of making a punch for a frat party. The first purchase was a new, clean 40 gallon plastic garbage can. That provided the container.

The rest of the contents was - cheap rum, cheap vodka, more cheap vodka, a little more cheap rum, Everclear, more Everclear, a LOT of Kook Aid cheery flavor powder, and a bunch of oranges, lemons and limes.

Oh, the KookAid masked the alcohol. :D:D:D

almost got in trouble at age 12 by spiking my tropical punch blend with 190 proof distilled spirit at a school function. I told a few friends there was alcohol in the punch, but they could not really taste it. The teacher was suspicious and tested it -- declared it was great. No alcohol detected so I escaped detention and incarceration.

Since that time, I've considered it one of my innate talents to make fine punch that delivers a punch. Add some slow-roasted spicy and tangy BBQ and you've got a party anytime.

Could you give some guidelines Robert for the less experienced, but no less avid, punch makers among us? Barbeque and rum punch sounds like just the thing for summer.

My advice is pick a theme based on whatever bad Parrot Bay flavor your misguided friends gave you for your birthday. =)

No, seriously, it depends on how potent you want it to be. The classic recipe for rum punch is "one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak." In general, as long as you follow those guidelines you can't go too far wrong. Some advice on the weak though: Ice counts as part of your weak, and use really big ice so it melts slowly. I know Jamie Boudreau (of spiritsandcocktails.com) uses a metal mixing bowl as his ice tray! Another thought is even though fruit juice is weak, also remember it's usually either sour (orange, lemon, lime, etc.) or sweet (most fruit juices). Ciders, perries, beers, and wines could reasonably count as weak, while still bringing additional flavor to the party. I'm not sure how beer would work, but I could see a dry champaign making a really good addition, though you might want to try a rum more in the style of brandy. Maybe a Belgian alembic beer? Mmm...I wish I had the money to experiment, for I see great things here.

one simple, great tasting party drink is my Piranha Punch

in a big bowl, combine 1 part fresh pomegranate juice, three parts fresh passionfruit juice, a hint of cream of coconut. add cachaзa until it bites you in the rear.
