The East coast of the USA is well known for it's activities during prohibition, but the West coast was not to be left out.
Here (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/story/343842.html) is a great "cat and mouse" story of running on the West coast.

Rum running, for better or worse, was the name given to an alcohol smuggling operation. In the case of west coast booze the source could have been Canadian whiskey, which would have fetched a much better price than the Mexican alcohol of the day.
A good part of it was Canadian whiskey courtesy of Samuel Bronfman. He made millions running whiskey to the US during prohibition. It made his company Seagram Co Ltd very profitable and helped it expand internationally.
