Hey everyone! It's so great to find a site with people who love rum as much as I do!
I'm a student in Northern Virginia, and I began my love affair with rum in '05-06 when I was doing disaster relief in the Gulf of Mexico. I quickly learned that there is, despite the media, life outside Bacardi, and I have been loving it!
I still consider myself something of a novice, but I'm working on getting my hands on as many different rums as I can. I look forward to finding out about more great rum from you all!

Welcome to the forums. Sometimes you have to travel before you are introduced to something that has been there all the time.
Hey welcome to the forums......I agree with your sentiment about Bacardi until I tried the Bacardi Anejo from Mexico...try it...I think you will be pleased.

Thanks! Right now I'm enjoying some Pyrat XO, and have a bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old on order. The selection at the local ABC (VA state-run liquor store) is a little limited when it comes to rum, but I can get things ordered. Does anyone have a favorite rum I should look out for?

When you look at a member's profile, if their list of favorite rums is public you can see what they choose to drink, or just wish they were drinking.

Welcome Alex.
Try different VA ABC stores...they all stock differently. I have some by me (in Alexandria) that carry nothing but bacardi, and others a mile away that carry every interesting rum that VA has. Also, if you are up for a drive into DC, try Addy Bassin's Macarthur Beverages on Macarthur Blvd, Central Liquors at 9th and F or Ace Beverage on New Mexico Ave by American University. None are cheap, but they each have good selections of rums you'll never find in VA. Good Hunting!!!

I had the opportunity to meet the owners of several of those DC stores on a recent trip and was pleasantly surprised by the selection. All of those stores are looking to improve their selections of rum, stay tuned.

Whenever a student comes on board, I'm tempted to chant: To(e)-Ga! To(e)-Ga! To(e)-Ga! Then I remember that the movie is so old I'd just be dating myself. Welcome to the forum!
